Virtue, Sin and Donald Trump.

It's all too easy to look at the 7 deadly sins and ascibe them to Donald Trump. Instead I will look,at the 7 divine virtues which correspond to the 7 deadly sins and see if Trump practices any of them.

1 Humility. This is probably the easiest. I can't think of a single example of Trump displaying humility.

2 Charity. Again none of that, Trump is a greedy man who values wealth.

3 Chastity. I don't even have to go there, but there's none.

4 Kindness. I haven't seen any of that.

5 Temperance. The only virtue Trump has by dint of his teetotalism, but his love of junk food probably wipes that out.

6 Patience. Look at the Ukraine "negotiations" not a lot of patience there.

7 Diligence. Depends on the definition, if filling all the key positions with incompetent yes men counts, he has it, if it means smooth running of government then no.

I may be wrong and if anyone wishes to point out Trump's virtuous nature then go ahead.

Itseems to me that the "Christian" right has turned Christianity on its head.

@Region Philbis,
Good point. In Maga circles that's about as kind as you get.

‘I must say, mein Führer, I’m so thankful I came’: Larry David spoofs Bill Maher’s fawning White House visit with Trump
Essay describes a surprise invitation in 1939 to a previously vocal critic for dinner with the Nazi leader, where ‘suddenly he seemed so human’

As this is a thread on Trump's morality this is a good place for the article.

I agree with everything Larry David wrote except for when he describes Maher as a comedian. I always considered him to be a smug, annoying, condescending unfunny git with a self satisfied smirk that is crying out for a well deserved smack in the mouth, but hey that's just me.

The Maher audience does not really laugh at his jokes. They applaud! He is no comedian. He is, in my opinion, a goddam bore.

As for his dinner with Trump...and the notion that we should try to understand and work with people like Trump to at least attempt to work things out...

...well he may be on to something there. There is even precedent for it.

It was tried back in the 1930's by UK PM Neville Chamberlain.

Worked great, didn't it.

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

@Frank Apisa,
You're right.

There's no dealing with these people. They'll just keep taking.

Trump is no longer pursuing the interests of those who voted for him,(if he ever did,) his attacks on health and social security show he's only interested in consolidating his own power and giving tax breaks to the uber wealthy.

That means we no longer have to respect his mandate.

That itself is important, when Tony Blair won a landslide in 1997 he set about changing things, as all new administrations do.

These changes were either popular or didn't stir much interest, (making the Bank of England politically independent isn't going to get a lot of talk down the pub.)

Blair remained popular until the invasion of Iraq, and it was only then he was going against his mandate, (Labour voters did not want to fight one of Bush's wars for him.)

Then people demonstrated. Trump reached that point a few months back. Now is the time to fight with every available tool. Acquiescence is fatal.

@glitterbag,
You'd think someone would tell him but I guess it's a case of the emperors new clothes. Everyone is too scared to say anything about it.

There is a comedian over her called Stuart Lee, he used to be part of a double act with Richard Herring.

They were very good.

I saw one of Lee's sets and found myself nodding along and agreeing with everything he said. However, by the end of the set I hadn't laughed once.

As a political speech it was brilliant, but as far as comedy goes, meh.

Happens a lot, Izzy. With Maher there is damn near no laughter except for the canned sound track they use.

And at this point, I am not even agreeing with any of his political points.

Lenny Bruce got that way towards the end of his career. I think sometimes people laughed but only because he shocked them.

@hightor,
I think Lenny's downfall was drugs. I'm not making any excuses for him, but boundless amounts of heroin et al make you nuts.

Both directly and indirectly – when he wasn't strung out he was bogged down in legal matters, trying to conduct his own defense on both obscenity and drug charges. And a case can be made that he was being persecuted by dime-store sheriffs, police chiefs, and district attorneys everywhere all the time.
