I think the people who vote for the Trumps and Palins and Marjorie Taylor Greens of the world are people whose values and beliefs are twisted beyond salvaging
These are people who claim to distrust – even hate – "the government". They pride themselves on their imagined independence yet they are total captives of the right-wing populism that is metastasizing in some many contemporary western democracies. They won't be told to wear a face mask but they'll keep donating to Trump anytime they're asked. They don't see how they are being exploited by economic and societal forces they can't even perceive. They're angry and fearful about idiotic cultural issues while the real threats to our country and our planet are belittled or ignored. The people who killed the country's industrial working class are the same ones now pulling their strings.

I've been trying to figure out why 74 million would vote for Trump. Why would people vote for somebody who would ultimately take away their right to vote, who would bring down democracy? It's cultish behavior, but it's easier than reasoning and thinking.
It must be comforting to be in a a cult. I wish I could be. I tried, But I'm too stubborn, have too many doubts , ask too many questions. It's hopeless.
There was a story by Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan. A man called Unk was kidnapped and forced to join an army on Mars to attack Earth. He had a device in his brain that would cause him pain if he thought too much or questioned orders. Then he was forced to undergo some kind of electroshock therapy that washed his memory away. This happened a number of times so he started leaving notes to himself in the future. One time he found a note he had left, and it said to ask questions. When the pain in your head starts, you know you're on the right track, so resist the pain.

But THEIR right to vote isn't perceived as being taken away. It's the "undesirables," you know the ones, the non-white people and others who don't look like them, do the same things, vote the same way or have the same values.
In essence, only the Christian Whites who are conservative enough to take away anybody's rights that deserve Democracy. And Trumpers are sure gonna make it known to all.

@coluber2001,
Willia Burroughs' Sects and Death is a really good examination of cults and the techniques of control.
The most important thing to have are enemies.

Governor Mike Pence's bill in Indiana required funerals for miscarriages and abortions.
This was an actual bill signed into law by Mike Pence in Indiana. Women who had miscarriages were tracked and were required to give funerals. You won't believe the ramifications of this in Indiana.
And what is even more bizarre is that there are people who continue to vote for people who propose such a law; vote for such a law; and sign into law such a law.
It's about the religiosity, we don't elect religious nutjobs, and anortion is a right signed into law, legislative, not interpretive law.

We don't do religion.
When Tony Blair was asked if he had prayed with George Bush he kept his mouth shut.
If he had said yes, there would have been moves in the Labour Party to remove him.
If he had lied it would have caused a spat with the Whitehouse.
What is more pressing, is why America is going backwards on this. With the sole exception of Poland, Western nations have been moving towards reproductive rights, even Ireland.
Chile has just passed pro reproductive rights legislation.
It's not about the difference between America and Britain, it's about the difference between America and the rest of the Western hemisphere.
