What does "put off" mean here? Does "they are especially not pleased by women"?

********************
American voters don’t hate ambitious women, after all
Study finds some differences in attitude, though, depending on party

Hillary Clinton’s surprising loss in the 2016 presidential election was chalked up, in part, to a widely held belief that voters prefer male candidates generally, and that they are especially put off by women who appear too ambitious or aggressive.

@oristarA,
They are offended by women in any position of power or leadership. These people are often put off by women who are office managers, company CEOs, Corporation Executives....

@Sturgis,
I've checked out both Cambridge Dictionary and Random House Unabridged English Dictionary and Oxford Dictionaries, the most close definition I found is "put off - Cause someone to feel dislike or distrust." That the "put off" means "offended" is really clear.
