Washington's football team to call itself Washington Football Team until it settles on a new name
Quote:
The Washington NFL franchise, formerly known as the Washington Redskins, is officially going to change its name to the Washington Football Team.

The new team name is effective immediately, and it will remain in place "pending adoption of a new team name," the team announced in a statement on Thursday.
The name change comes after the team faced increased pressure to change its name due to its racist connotations, and the team announced on July 13 that it would be changing the team's name.

@tsarstepan,
So many possibilities...

At first I thought maybe The Argonauts, then realized that th CFL has the hold on it with their Toronto team. If there's ever a chance of mixing NFL/AFL/CFL that might be rough.

I'm keen on naming them The Washington Aardvarks. Hey, nobody thought the Arkansas Razorbacks made sense either. And yet it has served them well.

Plus there was a military fighter aircraft named Aardvark.

Maybe The Potomacs...

They can call themselves whatever they want just as long as they drop the offensive term football.

@tsarstepan,
Given the nature of the game and the team's unparallelled dee-fens-ive swarmability:

Washington Swampers

Washington Mackems.

Mackem is a nickname for someone from Sunderland, particularly the football team.

Washington is a town within the city limits. It was referred to as Wasindone in 1096.

@Sturgis,
There’s a Chester Lee Street just down the road. It’s a town, not a street, but there’s probably a street of that name there.

(hence the bad "joke" I attempted)

@Sturgis,
There was a BBC documentary about the origins of words and phrases. People were asked to scour attics for oldest use of phrases like Pear Shaped.

Pear shaped never did get a satisfactory answer but Mackem did. Someone found an old football programme from 18 something or other with the phrase,
“We tack ‘em and we mack ‘em.”
Which for those of us not from Sunderland is we take them and we make them, reference to Sunderland’s industry.

@izzythepush,
I've heard pear shaped as an unflattering way to describe a woman's figure. I not sure what we are talking about right now, have I blundered unto unusual waters?

Dang! I've spent my whole life pronouncing Potomac as Puh-tome-ick. No great stress on any of the syllables.
