Taiwan, GNP, modernizing their military, blah blah. Here is something else about China to chew on:
Reading an article on child obesity in the US, there was also the mention that this issue is becoming global. Specifically mentioned was the growing problem in China. It seems that China's 'one child per family' policy has resulted in a generation of young Chinese males who are spoiled and overnourished; in fact, it is being called the 'Little Emperor' Syndrome.
What happens when this large male population becomes young adults? China will have a population imbalance of up to 8-1 of males over females, what with the preference for male children. So we will have a group of young men unable to find mates, used to getting what they want, and a whole bunch of them that will find their way into the The People's Army.
Look no further then radical Islam to figure out what happens to a large male population who do not seem to have the civilizing influence of women about. Radical Islam does this by choice, where women are 'protected' to the point of being invisible; China will arrive there whether they want to or not.
Even if the world makes it through the whole China/Taiwan/US problem, there is a coming storm, especially if there is an issue of China needing to look for oil resources to fuel their new way of life.....

This is indeed a sad sad sad issue for china's population - spoiled gentlemen whose family love them to death because of the one child policy and there is also the possibility they will not be able to become married to a chinese woman (which would probably shock their traditional parents

) - and its something that I do not believe the chinese government can do anything about.
The whole obsession with boys being their only child (might I add this is improving, the younger generation do not care what gender their child is) is a cultural thing among the population. One may blame the one child policy but even if there was no such policy, I can guarantee you, chinese parents will still aim to have a first born boy, or a family of boy-childs only and probably still spoil them all. Most of the families can afford to do so.
