@Sturgis,
I've only seen reruns of some of the older movies from the 1950s and 1960s.

Sidney Poitier was probably one of my favorites from watching some of his older movies as reruns on television.

I've seen several of Poitier older movies as reruns.

I don't remember the names of his movies.

I do remember (Guess Who's Coming To Dinner).

There was another movie where Poitier was a carpenter or a builder who was just passing through. He ended up stopping at a church and ended up helping the nuns build or fix their church. I can't remember the details of the movie.

I have also been a fan of comedic actor Steve Martin.
Steve Martin had a special talent to make you laugh and have heartfelt emotional moments.

(Plains Trains & Automobiles) contained many funny moments and heartfelt emotional moments.

Steve Martin skillfully knew how to blend comedy and a touch of drama to many of his roles, His physical comedy was also quite special.
Especially in (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels).

@edgarblythe,
Most of those people weren’t “acting” but rather playing out their own personalities in roles that asked for that kind of genre.

Ever see John Wayne do comedy or song and dance, or be the villain? Christian Bake, on the other hand, even transformed his body to get into character.

Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman immediately come to mind.
Sandra Bullock is also one of my favorites, because I find her charming
in almost all of her parts, and I applaud anybody with the balls to actually come collect their Razzi awards in person.

For the most part I don't see an improvement in today's acting onscreen, compared with the old contract actors. The most popular get as many jobs as they want and are not so different. In each generation, we have all levels of talent, where certain ones rise to the top.

@Ragman,
Add Gene Hackman to both lists. I could add at least a dozen more but these are my favorites without looking online for reminding.

John Wayne was always given run of the mill scripts by John Ford. Then Wayne was borrowed by another studio. I think the film was Red River. Ford was quoted as saying, "I didn't know the big son of a bitch could act." So he started giving him more complex roles after that.

@Ragman,
My list of current actors should include.so many more. That being said, Im including Bruce Dern because of his versatility and the intense and amazing acting he’s done,

Along with this, I’m including the female star of Misery, ... ohhh, ...got it:
Kathy Bates. Gawd, she’s great,

Oh and the old timers list should include Liz Taylor and Richard Burton too.
