Bush Says Patience Is Needed as Nations Build a Democracy

RICHARD W. STEVENSON
Published: May 19, 2005
Quote:
WASHINGTON, May 18 - President Bush called Wednesday for patience in assessing the progress of Iraq and other nations toward democracy. He said the United States had gotten off to a rocky start after its independence and that it could take years for newly free countries to establish the institutions necessary for stability and prosperity.

Is Bush trying to mollify our failures in Iraq?

Perhaps he was saying that if something is important to do, you should stick with it even if it's difficult. Sounds reasonable to me.

You know, most wars in history have not been a straight path from entry to victory, even for America, much less for other countries. I guess you only want us to take on the easy missions.

It is a "mission" that need not to have been undertaken at all.

Well then your elected democrats who passed the legislation giving him the authority are also guilty of the "lies" you keep chirping on about.

By the way Mr. President, just how much patience are we supposed to have? How many more of our GI's have to die so your patience can be awarded? You should have removed the forces the minute you found out there were no WMD.

Bill Clinton: Iraq Changes Good for Region

By JAN M. OLSEN
Associated Press Writer

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Former President Clinton said Wednesday the political changes in Iraq, including parliamentary elections in January, will help bring stability to the region.

Clinton met with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen and a number of Danish lawmakers during his visit. The former president spoke with reporters before flying to Jordan for a poverty conference.

"The Sunnis and the Shiites, the Kurds and all the various tribes can work out accommodations that will allow them to build a stable society, I think that will be good for Iraq and good for the Middle East," Clinton said at the end of a two-day visit to Denmark.

In January, Iraq held the its first democratic parliamentary elections to choose a 275-member National Assembly and provincial legislatures.

"There is no point living in the past," Clinton said. "Look at where we are now. Everyone, all freedom-loving people would be better off with a genuinely representative, effective, free government in Iraq whatever your feelings are about what went on before."

We are ALL guilty. All of us. Actions done in our name could have been prevented with more resistance from our society. We all equally have blood on our hands for allowing this to happen.

This is what I like about ya woiyo; you disagree with me but aren't blinded by ideology. It is refreshing.

But this war is supposed to already be over. We're not talking about war at this point, we're talking about a country running itself. It was doing this before we came. It can't seem to do it now.

They're both saying that the mission was to disarm Iraq, and that mission has been accomplished.

It was running itself smoothly before because a dictator ruled with an iron fist. Now there is the attempt to form the normal institutions of government, plus a portion of the world battle between militant Islam and Western democracy. Is there something about this that is particularly hard to grasp?

That is apparently your belief, but belief is not knowledge. I assume that if I asked for anything to support your interpretation I would engender some crack about my age or about how I have blinders on, but nothing on point.

What of this great patience when it came to allowing inspectors to do their job? Hmmm? Where was his patience then?

No. We had a valid "warrant" to remove the regime due to constant violations of the terms of surrender and a valid "warrent" to search and remove any WMD. We accomplished the first objective when we pulled Saddam out of the "hole". We continued our search at then came to the determination that there were no WMD.

AT THAT MOMENT, US Soldiers stopped being soldiers and became peacekeepers and traffic cops and TARGETS. Once our soldiers stop being soldiers, get them out of harms way. It is WAY PAST TIME for the Iraquis to govern themselves. If they still want to kill each other, not my problem.

Don't blame Bush for that. There was 12 years of "patience" which returned nothing prior to Bush getting in office.

Well, while I agree with most you say here, I'm not sure just pulling out is the answer. We have some responsibility to assist the new government in acheiving stability.

Let's see, 12 years of patience that returned nothing or 2 years of action that returned billions of dollars down the drain that could have been used productively, countless deaths, maimings, the bitter division of our citizens, the tarnishment of our status and image globally and no end in sight...... I think I'll go for door number 1 Monty.
