Canadians--Sponsorship scandal and Martin's address

Just wondering what the Canadian contingent thinks about the current tide in Canadian politics.
In another thread, IronLionZion wrote

Canada is far too liberal to hand the riegns over to that ultra-right ideologue Harper.
IronLionZion said it, April 2, 2004 - mark my words.

....but the polls have indicated a massive shift--qualifying the shift not so much as an appeal to Harper, rather, a rejection of Martin.
There are only a few who want Harper to lead, but there are far more who are simply rejecting the liberal party based on the preliminary evidence revealed in the Gomery inquiry.

Thoughts?
Can Martin pull this one out by addressing the nation?
Can Harper be an effective leader by default?

Listened to Martin and the rest of the kids last night.
Still mulling it over.

The only thing I'm sure of, is that I'll be p.o'd at whoever calls an early election. Guess I'll have to vote Rhinoceros or something similar.

Canadians, by and large, cast their votes AGAINST the prevailing party, not FOR the party they vote for.

Another pile of money going to another election. I think this one will be too close to call. The eligible voters do not exactly rush out in droves to cast their ballots. Too many fence sitters.

The marriage of Conservatives and the Alliance could throw a lot of people off too.

:-(

Since the marriage didn't take here in Ontario, all bets are off. The provincial Conservatives have made it clear they are NOT friends of the federal Conservatives.

Idiots, all of them.

Kinda takes the wind out of a possible Conservative majority, wouldn't you say? Very Happy

The pundits are saying it'll be another minority - they just can't figure out minority what.

Idiots.

Wasting our money all over the place.

The funny thing is (if one can find anything funny in all of this) is that they will be wasting more money because of wasting money in the first place. Tried to buy Quebec when Quebec can't be bought.

Québec can be bought, but no one would be willing to pay the price. It is no different now than in 1838, when the Patriotes were bought--and the price was equal representation in Parliament with English speakers. That was a strain on relations when Canada West and Canada East united, as it was, when their respective populations were roughly equal. With confederation, and the addition of all those English-speaking provinces, the deal was off.

Québec cannot be bought, only because they will never be granted the political power they would demand, and because the politicians in the rest of the confederation, for however much they may despise la France Nouvelle, don't want to see the confederation broken up by its departure.

So, Intrepid is exactly right--Québec cannot be bought.
