or not

our local paper says yes, other sites say no

they can't seem to decide whether they've seen black or white smoke

First wisps send the wrong signals
Natasha Bita, Vatican City
April 20, 2005
"E' BIANCO!" It's white! Squealing with anticipation, the crowd holding vigil in St Peter's Square erupted in a collective thrill as the cardinals cloistered in the Sistine Chapel sent up their first smoke signal in the papal election.

But gasps over the first pale puffs of smoke - mistaken for a few moments as white wisps heralding a new pope - turned to groans of disappointment as the tiny chimney belched black.

Monday's confusion was repeated yesterday when the cardinals sent out a black signal at noon - then repeated it 10 minutes later, sending spectators scurrying back into the square.

New Pope Elected on Second Day of Conclave

Europe - AP
By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer

VATICAN CITY - White smoke poured from a chimney at the Vatican and bells tolled on Tuesday evening, announcing to the world that a new pope was elected in the first papal conclave of the new millennium.

"Bells tolled" seems to add a layer of certainty...?

Song remains the same, indeed.

Pope Benedict XVI. Huh.

John Paul was pope since I was 8, weird to think of a pope with a different name. John Paul = pope.

First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Do whatever steps you want if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff.
Everybody say his own
Kyrie eleison,
Doin' the Vatican Rag.
Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional.
There the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!
So get down upon your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman;
Ave Maria,
Gee, it's good to see ya.
Gettin' ecstatic an' sorta dramatic an'
Doin' the Vatican Rag!

Had to learn even two within one year (Paul VI and John Paul I), besides the two before
