I was recently laid off from what I considered the perfect college job: I answered phones for a catalog company.
Now, short of finding another very similar job, I have no idea what sort of job I should be looking for, so my searches feel hopeless.
It's not there are not plenty of jobs that I am qualified for, it's that I don't want any of them.
Maybe I'm not in the best position to be picky, but if I'm to get a job, I'd like to keep it until I'm done with school (still talking years here) - or until my education advances far enough to allow proper advancement, so to speak. So, it's important that I like the job and that it doesn't present any stress.
In short, I'm looking for job suggestions that I may not have considered. What jobs did you hold while going to college?
I did lots of different jobs while in college, from factory type work to bartending and cocktail waitressing. My best college job, though, was an intern job as a systems administrator which turned into a career. I suggest trying to find something with a company that is somehow related to what you are studying. It doesn't have to be a job doing what you're studying to do, but somehow related would be your best bet. For instance, if you are studying to be a journalist, you could answer phones for a magazine or newspaper (since you have experience answering phones).
I worked at the local university library from the time I was a junior in high school until I graduated from college. For the last two years of that stint I worked for the university archivist and did a number of interesting projects for him. I held this job year round, working full-time in the summer and part time during the school year.
