Teddy Thompson is someone I just discovered. He's the son of Linda and Richard Thompson. He's got an amazing voice - kind of reminds me of Jackson Browne a little bit- and his songs have good melodies and are very singable (if you like to sing along like I do). He's a little depressed - and can get kind of mean (he must have gotten really hurt by someone sometime) - but I think he's a talent worth mentioning. His album- Separate Ways- has become a new favorite of mine.
I Should Get Up (Teddy Thompson)
Depression looms, I'm such a miserable fool
I stayed in bed, I don't want to go to school
I see the sun is beating down
There's no excuses from the cloud
I should get up, I should go out
I'm sure there's something I can't do without
I should get up
I should get up
I should get up
I've heard it said that life will pass you by
Live underground- pretty soon that's where you'll lie
But I feel so warm here in my room
I'm safe and sound inside my tomb
(Chorus)
The world goes on without me
I know it, I know it
Noone misses the quiet kid
And there are things I might have missed
But living ignorant is bliss
I got no time for everyone else.
I should get up.... (Chorus)
Altered State (Teddy Thompson)
So far things have been alright
No complaints, oh this has been a good life
But sometimes I need more
Just to get up and out the door.
I like to live in an altered state
It makes me love all the things I hate
And I'm happy to be alive
Don't want to come off too straight-laced
I like to put on my happy face
While I cry on the inside.
Is it so hard to be happy
That I struggle to feel just okay
And I need a lift just to get through
Just to get up normal with you.
I like to live in an altered state.... (Chorus)
*When I told my son I liked this song - he said- "Oh great- advocating drug use now, huh?" I told him, "No, that's not what it's about." I think this song is about choosing what state of mind one chooses to live his or her life in- and how we all live our life in whatever altered state we choose. Some states work better than others....
Hans Zimmer & (I forget her name) soundtrack and songs from Gladiator for example, right now is
Now We Are Free
We Could Be Heroes (written by David Bowie and as performed by the Wallflowers)
I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins
Like dolphins can swim
Though nothing
nothing will keep us together
We can beat them
Forever and ever
Oh we can be heroes
Just for one day
I,
I will be king
And you
You will be queen
Though nothin', nothin' will
Drive them away
We can be heroes just for one day
We can be us
Just for one day.
I, I remember
Standing
By the wall
And the guns
Shot above our heads
And we kissed
As though nothing could fall
And the shame
Was on the other side
Oh we can beat them
For ever and ever
Then we can be heroes
Just for one day
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
We could be heroes
We could be heroes just one day.
*This has been one of my very favorite songs for years. I loved David Bowie's version - but I have to say I love the Wallflower's version even more. I love the bass line and the harmonies. I think Jakob Dylan has an incredible voice- though he's not the writer his father is - he's a better singer in a lot of ways.
!
my favorite song right now

Don't Fence Me In (Bing Crosby)
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in.
Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western skies.
On my Cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise.
I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
And I can't look at hovels and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in.
Did you ever just feel like you've been set free? I think this song perfectly encapsulates that feeling. I never knew Bing Crosby wrote it though. You learn something everyday...
She's not there - The Zombies.
Will always love this song. I have been coming back to it for ages, it now has a permanent spot on my Ipod.

New York Telephone Conversation (Lou Reed)
I was sleeping, gently napping, when I heard the phone
Who is on the other end talking? Am I even home?
Did you see what she did to him? Did you hear what they said?
Just a new york conversation, rattling in my head.
Oh, my, and what shall we wear?
Oh, my, and who really cares?
Just a New York conversation, gossip all of the time
Did you hear who did what to whom? Happens all the time.
Who has touched and who has dabbled here in the city of shows
Openings, closings, bad repartee, everybody knows
Oh, how sad, why do we call
Oh, I'm glad to hear from you all
I am calling, yes I'm calling just to speak to you
For I know this night will kill me, if I can't be with you
If I can't be with you .
Not specifically directed - just listening to Transformer and didn't want to put lyrics to a love song....he's got a lot of those on that record - kind of a departure for him. This is a funny one...
Just been playing the DVD of the Cream Reunion Concert, so almost anything from them, but particularly "Politician"
Right now it's THUNDERSTRUCK - ACDC
