Laughing I Wish (Stevie Wonder)

Looking back on when i
Was a little nappy headed boy
Then my only worry
Was for christmas what would be my toy
Even though we sometimes
Would not get a thing
We were happy with the
Joy the day would bring

Sneaking out the back door
To hang out with those hoodlum friends of mine
Greeted at the back door
With "boy thought I told you not to go outside"
Tryin' your best to bring the
Water to your eyes
Thinkin' it might stop her
From woopin' your behind

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go
I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go
Cause I love them so

Brother says he's tellin'
'bout you playin' doctor with that girl
Just don't tell I'll give you
Anything you want in this whole wide world
Mama gives you money for sunday school
You trade yours for candy after church is through

Smokin' cigarettes and writing something nasty on the wall (you nasty boy)
Teacher sends you to the principal's office down the wall
You grow up and learn that kinda thing ain't right
But while you were doin'it-it sure felt outta sight

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go
I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ev-er have to go?
Cause I loved them so....

One of my favorites by Stevie Wonder off Songs in the Key of Life - his masterpiece, I think -before he got all sappy...

Love them! Thanks so much for telling me about them. I've been playing them from their website - but I'm going to get their CD's tomorrow. I'm also excited to hear Tunde's solo effort that comes out this fall. Again, thanks so much. I love this song because of the gospel choir and the reference to "One" - one of my favorite songs by U2. Also the words are just the simplest truth...

I think I have found a kindred spirit. I was surfing the web just casually to find some info about them after I heard (and really enjoyed) their song "High" in 2003 - that was their first song I heard from them. broke my heart when I found out they had broken up in 2001 - and right before a concert they were supposed to be having! A lot of their fans were downright angry at them (can't blame the fans) saying they were really disrespectful of their fans.

I find their songs very uplifting - "High" really came to me at a good time when I was feeling really down about my first year at university. I asked around and eventually one of my good friends gave me her CD which featured High and another three of their songs - Ocean Drive then became my second favourite.

I found a site that had all the lyrics to their songs and I was reading them (all very good, very uplifting, almost spiritual) and I found one that I thought I may enjoy - Lost in Space but I wasn't sure how to obtain it (Australia isn't very big on Lighthouse Family it seems). Luckily I listen to this radio station that plays easy listening music so I called them and made a request for "any lighthouse family song" and the guy on the other end says "Lost in Space?"

I almost fainted - did he read my mind?

So I listened to that one all the time smiling. Its my favourite at the moment, probably because it reminds me of a certain special someone in my life, who is my "soul satelitte."

Anyway that's my story. Glad you enjoy them, aidan.

No Excuses (Alice in Chains)

It's alright
There comes a time
Got no patience to search
For peace of mind
Layin' low
Want to take it slow
No more hiding or
Disguising truths I've sold

Everyday it's something
Hits me all so cold
Find me sittin' by myself
No excuses, then I know

It's okay
Had a bad day
Hands are bruised from
Breaking rocks all day
Drained and blue
I bleed for you
You think it's funny, well
You're drowning in it too

Yeah, it's fine
We'll walk down the line
Leave our rain, a cold
Trade for warm sunshine
You my friend
I will defend
And if we change, well I
Love you anyway

I don't like everything Alice in Chains does, some of their harmonies are just really off and though I can only guess they do it on purpose, rather than as just being really off-key, it creates a real dissonance to my ear- but in this song, though it's there, it's not so noticeable. I love this song. I love the vocals and the lyric - that through all the **** life throws at you -you just keep breaking those rocks and if you have someone to stand beside you, that's half the battle.

Two songs by Jesse Winchester that I had forgotten about - but I'm having a nostalgic afternoon listening to them- I'd forgotten how much his music means to me.

Nothing But A Breeze (Jesse Winchester)

Life is much too short for some folks
For other folks it just drags on
Some folks like the taste of smokey whiskey
Others figure tea's too strong
Well, I'm the type of guy who likes to ride the middle
I don't like all this bouncing back and forth
Me, I want to live with my feet in Dixie
And my head in the cool blue North

And there we'll do just as we please
It ain't nothing but a breeze

Living' in our small suburban garden
Not a single neighbor knows our name
I know the little woman wishes we would move somewhere
Where the houses aren't all just the same
She says, "Jesse, I wish you would take me
Where the grass is greener
I really couldn't say where it may be
Somewhere up on a mountain top
Or down by the deep blue sea".

And there we'll do just as we please
It ain't nothing but a breeze

One day I'll be an old gray grandpa
All the pretty girls will call me "sir,"
Now, where they're asking me how things are
Soon they'll ask me how things were
Well, I don't mind being an old gray grandpa
If you'll be my gray grandma
But I suggest we go have our milk and cookies
In the shade of the old paw-paw

And there we'll do just as we please
It ain't nothing but a breeze.

and....

That's What Makes You Strong (Jesse Winchester)
If you love somebody
Then that means you need somebody
And if you need somebody
That's what makes you think you're weak
But if you know you're weak
And you know you need someone
O it's a funny thing
That's what makes you strong

That's what makes you strong
That's what gives you power
That's what lets the meek come sit beside the king
That's what lets us smile
In our final hour
That's what moves our souls
And that's what makes us sing

And to trust somebody
Is to be disappointed
It's never what you wanted
And it happens every time
But if you're the trusting kind
This don't even cross your mind
O it's a funny thing
That's what makes you strong

That's what makes you strong
That's what gives you power
That's what lets the meek come sit beside the king
That's what lets us smile
In our final hour
That's what moves our souls
And that's what makes us sing

Carta al Cielo - Javier Corcobado

Querido cielo,
mirando azul nuestros lamentos,
perros de felicidad.
Querido cielo,
no quiero morir,
lárgate lejos de mi canción.
Querido cielo,
vete de aquí,
no quiero verte ni en mis sueños,
deja mis sueños.
Pero la rabia de vuestras armas
en copas rotas se tornará,
y vuestras lágrimas, ríos sin mar,
en una noche sin tu belleza.
Nadie me besará cuando yo muera.
Nadie me amará cuando yo muera.

And a humble english translation:

Dear heaven,
the wings snow the brandy of love
Dear heaven,
the dusk announces the surgical part of your silences
And look at me when I won't be able to love
Bring the definite sign:
a rainbow crossing over a heart's shadow
A thousand angels have already died for drinking full moon kisses
but left their sweet footsteps sacrificed on our veins
Nobody will kiss me when I die
Nobody will love me when I die

Dear angel,
you are here in the roar of the guitars
watching our laments blue, dogs of happiness
Dear heaven,
I don't want to die, get far away from my song
Dear heaven go away,
I don't want so see you even in my dreams, leave my dreams.
But the rage of your weapons will turn into broken wineglasses
and your tears, sealess rivers, in a night without your beauty
Nobody will kiss me when I die
Nobody will love me when I die

Joe, are you sure that's a song and not just a poem?

I'm pretty sure it's both, I heard it as a song and read it as a poem.

I've been listening to Joe Cocker a lot lately. I've always had a little crush on him-his intensity is magnetic and his rasping, growly, bluesy voice is beyond compare when it comes to singing soul. I've seen him twice, once in a small theatre in Philadelphia and again at Woodstock '94. No one can put on a show like he can. I found a record I hadn't heard by him in the clearance bin for 3.99. Respect Yourself. On this record he does a cover of Respect Yourself by Luther Ingram and Mark Rice, which is a great song anyway, but his version really stands out. He's got CC White (the gospel singer) on backup vocals and an incredible horn section (noone knows how to use back up vocals and horns like Joe Cocker). Anyway, my favorite song on the record is:

Love Not War (Tom Snow/Barbara Griffin)
Just twenty-four hours ago the sound my heart made as it broke
Echoed across the room and cut right through the words you spoke
I don't wanna fight til three a.m., wake up red-eyed and start again
Baby, my tears won't solve a thing...

Do you even know what you're fighting for?
Baby, cause I can't take it anymore
Let's make love not war.
We can get it back like it used to be
Lay down your arms, baby come to me
Let's make love not war.

If love is oxygen, we're cutting off the air supply
You sting, and I can't breathe
I need to know the reason why
If I've been hard to handle I'll be the first to apologize
Cause baby, this goes both ways.

Do you even know what you're fighting for?
Cause I can't take it anymore
Let's make love, not war.
We can get it back like it used to be
Lay down your arms, baby come to me
Let's make love not war....

If you're a Joe Cocker fan - you should give this record a listen...

Feeling homesick and nostalgic - my dad used to sing me this song as a lullabye.

I Ride an Old Paint
arranged and adapted by Arlo Guthrie

I ride an old paint, I lead an old dan
I'm goin' to Montana to throw the hoolihan
They feed in the coulees, they water in the draw
Their tails are all matted, their backs are all raw

CHORUS:
Ride around little dogies, ride around them slow
For the fiery and snuffy are rarin' to go

Old Bill Jones had a daughter and a son
One went to college, the other went wrong
His wife, she got killed in a poolroom fight
But still he's a-singin' from mornin' till night

CHORUS

When I die, take my saddle from the wall
Place it on my old pony, lead him out of his stall
Tie my bones to my saddle and turn our faces to the West
And we'll ride the prairie we love the best
