Welcome Seas-it's startling to see your post right after Aidans lyrics. Hope you stick around.

Traffic was a fine "jamming " group and in fact we saw a Dave Mason show last month in a 300 seat theatre and he still has it.

Mr Quaye I don't recognize, but then again a lot of new music slips by me nowadays.

Quaye is new to me, as is Traffic. I heard the song 'Dear Mr. Fantasy' somewhere and tracked it down. If you have any suggestions for other songs by them, I'd be pleased as punch to know. Smile

What Wondrous Love Is This - by William Walker - first heard this song done by Melanie (Brand New Key person) years ago and more recently by a gospel group called Voices of Joy. It's been in my head since I heard about the bombing in London yesterday. A beautiful - reassuring-strength reaffirming song for me.

What wondrous love is this - oh my soul, oh my soul
What wondrous love is this - oh my soul
What wondrous love is this - that caused the lord of bliss
To send this perfect peace to my soul- oh my, oh my soul
Oh my soul.

When I was sinking down- oh my soul - oh my soul
When I was sinking down - oh my soul
When I was sinking down - I stopped and looked around
And there I heard the sound of my soul-oh my, oh my soul
Oh my soul.

And when from death I'm free - I'll sing on, I'll sing on
And when from death I'm free - I'm gonna sing
And through eternity, I'll sing and joyful be-who is afraid? I am not.
What wondrous love is this - oh my soul, oh my, oh my soul
Oh my soul....

*Sea Asleep - Traffic is one of my favorite bands- one album I love by them is John Barleycorn must die - have you heard it? I only have their stuff on vinyl and don't have it with me here - so I can't remember any other specific album names - but do a google search. If you like Mr. Fantasy (which is also one of my all-time favorite songs) or Steve Winwood - you'd like them. You might want to also check out Cream - they have a similar sound.

I agree aidan. This album had Steve Winwood's stamp all over it. And none of Dave Mason's saccharine input. He was long gone.

Tracks (remastered CD)

1. Glad (6:59)
2. Freedom Rider (5:25)
3. Empty Pages (4:34)
4. I Just Want to Know (1:31)
5. Stranger to Himself (3:51)
6. John Barleycorn (6:22)
7. Every Mother's Son (7:04)
8. Sittin' Here Thinkin' of My Love (3:32)
9. Backstage & Introduction (1:50)
10. Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring (live) (6:56)
11. Glad (live) (11:30)

Thanks Panzade - my brother used to listen to Dave Mason all the time. I remember I loved the song that started "If you ever - change your mind - about leavin' - leavin' me behind"....and I can't remember the rest. I'm gonna have to do some downloading. I have a lot of this stuff on vinyl which is all in my sister's attic in the states - but don't have it to listen to here -get's frustrating when you have a song in your head and you want to hear it...

Interesting song. Originally recorded by Sam Cooke in the early 60's, the British group The Animals did a great cover in 1966.

Yeah - I've always liked that bluesy sound. I've heard the Sam Cook - but don't know that I've heard the Animals version. I'm gonna have to get busy and check some of this stuff out. Thanks for your suggestions.

Someone reminded me of this song yesterday and speaking of the blues, my favorite song today is:

Orange Juice Blues - (Blues for Breakfast) (Richard Manuel)
I had a hard time waking this morning
I got a lot of things on my mind
Like those friends of yours that keep on bringing me down
Just hangin' round all the time
I 've had a hard time waking most mornings
And it's been that way for a month or more
You've had things your way - but now I got to say
On my way out the door.
Why don't you get right, try and get right baby
You haven't been right with me
Why don't you get right, try and get right baby
Don't you remember how it used to be?

You had a hard time waking this morning
And I could see it in your empty eyes
But there's no need for talking or walking round the block
Just to figure out the reason why
I have a hard time handing out warnings
So I'll just slide on out the door
Cause I'm tired of everything being beautiful, beautiful
And I aint comin' back no more
But can't you get right, try to get right baby
You haven't been right with me
Why don't you get right, try to get right baby
Don't you remember how it used to be....

Love his voice on this and the saxophone solo.

"Richard Manuel's is the first voice you hear on the first Band album Music from Big Pink. After a Robbie Robertson guitar intro that sounds as if it's being fed through Garth Hudson's Lowrey organ at its most distorted, his aching baritone launches into the first reproachful line of `Tears of Rage`. As it arches over `arms`, you can't help thinking of Ray Charles, the singer who more than any other shaped this unlikely white soul voice from Stratford, Ontario. And by the end of the first chorus you realize why, in an almost unspoken way, Manuel's fellow Band vocalists Levon Helm and Rick Danko always looked upon him as the group's `lead` singer."

Richard Manuel 1943-1986 He will be missed.

Times Like These (One Way Motorway)
*couldn't find a writing credit other than Foo Fighters, but I think Dave Grohl writes most of their stuff:

I, I'm a one way motorway
I'm the road that drives away
Then follows you back home
I am a street light shining
I'm a white light blinding bright
Burning off and on

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

I am a new day rising
I'm a brand new sky
To hang the stars upon tonight
I am a little divided
Do I stay or run away
And leave it all behind?

It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again

My daughter made me a compilation cd of songs she likes. This was on it - I like the foo fighters but haven't listened to them lately. Speaking of Richard Manuel (who I saw early in '86 at a concert the Band did at an ice-hockey rink in Hillsborough, NC) right before he committed suicide - and then listening to this song made me wonder- if this song had been around back then and he'd heard it , or if Kurt Cobain had heard it, maybe it would have made a difference for them. It's a hopeful song, I think - I'm glad my daughter is listening to stuff like this.

*Edited cut and paste lyrics to reflect what the singer sang.

Don't know much about the Foo Fighters but I like their songs and Nirvana was a lot more than just Cobain. Dave Grohl is a monster talent.

I think so too. I don't listen to the radio much anymore so I depend on my kids to introduce me to new stuff- luckily they have good taste. My daughter is l3 and she loves stuff as disparate as Al Green and Bill Withers, and Foo Fighters and Chili Peppers. My son's the same way although he doesn't go in for the soul quite as much as she does - he's more into rap. But it's fun to watch them soaking up music like I did when I was around their ages, and to have them introduce new music to me. I guess it's true when they say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

I love this song because it expresses exactly what it is to adopt and love a child for your own.

This Is To Mother You (Sinead O'Connor)

This is to mother you - to comfort you and get you through
Through when your nights are lonely, through when your dreams are only blue
This is to mother you
This is to be with you - to hold you and to kiss you too
For when you need me I will do
What your own mother couldn't do
Which is to mother you
Oh the pain that you have known
Oh the violence in your soul
All the wrong things you have done
I will take from you when I come
Oh mistakes made in distress
All of your unhappiness
I will take away with my kiss, yes
I will give you tenderness
For child I am so glad I found you
Although my arms have always been around you
Sweet bird, although you did not see me
I saw you
And I'm here to mother you
To comfort you and get you through
Through when your nights are lonely
Through when your dreams are only blue
This is to mother you.

Oh what a coincidence - I was just talking to aidan about some of our favourite bands and artists. Mine would definetly be Lighthouse Family, but i won't post up the lyrics, or else I'll take up 10 pages by myself. Among my favourites by LF are:

- High: Cos we are gonna be forever you and me, you will always keep it flying high in the sky...

- Lost in Space: You are my soul satelite, I'd be lost in space without you...and I'll never lose my faith in you...how will I ever get to heaven if I do?

- Postcards from Heaven: Never find the perfect situation till you know where you're from...

- Ocean Drive: Sun's gonna shine on everything we do and the sky, so blue, sun's gonna shine on everything we do...

<That's enough for today, I think.>

I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free (Lighthouse Family)

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
I wish I could say all the things that I should say
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole wide world to hear

I wish I could share
All the love that's in my heart
Remove all the bars that keep us apart
And I wish you could know how it is to be me
Then you'd see and agree that every man should be free

I wish I could be like a bird in the sky
How sweet it would be if I found I could fly
Well I'd soar to the sun and look down at the sea
And I'd sing cos I know how it feels to be free

I wish I knew how it would feel to be free
I wish I could break all the chains holding me
And I wish I could say all the things that I wanna say
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole wide world to hear
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole wide world to hear
Say 'em loud say 'em clear
For the whole wide world to hear

One love one blood
One life you've got to do what you should
One life with each other
Sisters, brothers

One love but we're not the same
We got to carry each other Carry each other
One One One One One...

I knew how it would feel to be free
I knew how it would feel to be free

*Pragmatic - turned grey and rainy so we didn't go to Cornwall, so I've been listening to Lighthouse Family pretty much all day. Love them! Thanks so much for telling me about them. I've been playing them from their website - but I'm going to get their CD's tomorrow. I'm also excited to hear Tunde's solo effort that comes out this fall. Again, thanks so much. I love this song because of the gospel choir and the reference to "One" - one of my favorite songs by U2. Also the words are just the simplest truth...

I wanted to go to St. Michael's Mount and Tintangel - can you believe that the last time we drove all the way down there and the sea was too rough and we couldn't get out to see either? I didn't want to risk it again- although at about 2:00 today when it was too late to start out - the sun came out and it's been pretty nice ever since. Oh well..
You should listen to these guys (Lighthouse Family) Panzade - you might really like them. An interesting sound - kind of along the lines of Seal - and the lead singer has a really engaging voice.
