djbt: Or we might work on defining the terms. Until we agree on a vocabulary I sense we'll continue to talk past each other. 'Consciousness' means 'awareness', but it's sometimes used to refer to different types of awarness. What 'experiences' our experiences is the brain--consciousness emerges from brain activity. Your reference to the existence of a "singular 'I'" as something somehow separate from the brain, that the brain might somehow tap into it, suggests that you are, in fact, talking about the soul. I'm confused because we're having a discussion but don't seem to be speaking the same lingo.

A separate discussion has been set up on consciousness, so I'm going to scoot over there and see what I can learn. Perhaps we could continue in this column if any conclusions are drawn in the other? (Presuming the internet still exists then...)
