That anyone still cares about the unemployment rate is depressing, if the government wants to show me something then it can show me employment data, hours worked and wages earned. We are watching millions of people who want/need to work but cant find a job or can only find a supper crappy job that does not pay enough to live disappear off the radar screen because we insist upon looking at the wrong numbers. It is unreasonable to expect a person who has full knowledge that no one will ever hire him (usually because he tried to find a job over the course of a couple years) to continue to register with the employment office and keep applying for jobs every week. It is spiritually ruinous to try to meet the states demand.

@hawkeye10,
What is interesting about employment/unemployment numbers are the contradictions we see in our economy. Several big high tech firms in our area are building mega-buildings to house more workers, and the latest report on auto and airplane production in the US are on the upswing.

The stock market increased by over 1,100 points on the DOW for this year.

We're getting rich on paper! LOL I've suggested to my wife that she make some RMD withdrawals soon.

These would often be non American workers that these firms import because they will work for less pay than AMericans. What is good for the firm is now days often not good for America or Americans.

@hawkeye10,
hawk, You're not keeping up; most jobs are being sought by Americans. From an article I read many months ago, 77% are Americans. It's also a good idea to attract foreign talent to the US; it keeps us competitive. On the other side of the coin, many US high tech companies have opened off shore offices, so the need for foreigners to come to the US to work in the high tech industry is minimized. There are stories galore about Indians who came to the US to work, quit, returned to India, and started their own business. Bangalore is a good case in point.

Wrong direction

A vast majority of small businesses – 78% -- “think the U.S. economy is currently in recession,” according to the 2011 U.S. Bancorp small business survey released last month. And under the great leadership of Barack Obama, 85% of small businesses do not think things will get better next year.

I'm sure Dick Obama has pushed his T time back and that he is currently warming up his teleprompters
in preparation to once again go on live TV and blame Bush for all of the problems he has inherited.

Dick Obama is a gutless hack that will never accept responsibility for any of his actions.

Dick Obama is going to lie to America once again.

What a dick.

@H2O MAN,
The reason unemployment is increasing is because all levels of government are laying off workers.

A couple of months ago, I asked: why are we focusing on ANYTHING but jobs right now?

And my question still remains. The GOP has successfully kept the prez from doing anything about the jobs situation, and they don't intend to do anything about it themselves. What can be done to stimulate employment in such an environment?

I do think it's worth pointing out that the number of government jobs has dropped by 500k since Obama took office; he's now presided over larger cuts to government than any modern Republican president dreamed of. So, in a way, this situation is EXACTLY what Republicans say they want.

@Cycloptichorn,
What employment would you like to see stimulated Cyclo. Does what the job entails not interest you at all as long as it's a job. Does an industry dedicated to raising the hemline one year and lowering it the next have jobs?

Your general stigmatising of unemployment is possibly the last thing we need at this stage of mechanisation. If the unemployed were paid the average wage how many would volunteer for redundancy. And if the number was 50 million what evidence have you that it wouldn't be more efficient than 5 million and that people would be less happy? Life might return to the suburbs during the day.

@Cycloptichorn,
Don't you know? Government jobs are transfers of wealth from the rich to the poor. Our country doesn't need 'em; they're a drag for the rich to get richer. Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Twisted Evil

The only reason employment ever increased under Barry 'kind of a dick' Obama's watch is because all levels of government took on workers they didn't need.

Has anyone ever seen waterboy post anything that's true? For those who have, please raise your hand. Why do people bother responding to this imbecile with no brains? All he deserves are adjectives that describe his personality; stupid and worthless.

It's even worse than you think...

Contributing to the weak tenor of the report, the department said:
the economy created 44,000 fewer jobs in April and May than previously thought.

Even those who are lucky enough to have jobs are finding they have less spending power these days.

Workers made less per week in June than anytime over the past 18 months, when adjusted for inflation.

The downward spiral in wages is yet another sign of how troubled the jobs market is, economists said. And it will also slow the pace of the recovery since Americans won't start buying more until they are earning more
