Where is the US economy headed?

@hawkeye10,
The only hope for the Republicans is if they can stick the recession on the democrats.

A hard to sell tale since it officially started in Jan of 2008 and they spent 4 years calling the recession that started after Bush took office the "Clinton recession."

A 6.2% downturn in the economy for Bush's last quarter is hard to ignore or explain away as democrat's fault.

Republicans seem to agree, which means that they are delusional......the most likely result from the economic collapse is that everybody who was maleficent and thus caused this collapse will be blown out. Both parties are unlikely to survive if this collapse does not get fixed fast. Rep's and Dems need to suck it up and show that they can work together to solve problems if either one expects to escape without becoming the focus of intense anger and revenge.

@parados,
They will continue to blame the democrats whether Clinton or Obama; that's their strategy whether it has any facts or truth in it. If they repeat it often enough, they hope it'll stick.

That unfortunately worked when America was fat and lazy and too drugged up on nerve ending stimulation to pay attention. It will not work now. People are hurting, and they will figure out why and then reach out and hurt back those who they blame for causing this pain.

@hawkeye10,
That's true; the young workers are the ones who will suffer the most. Not only because their pay has not kept up with inflation for those who had jobs during the past eight years, but because job creation under Bush has been dismal. There are estimates that the US must create some 150,000 jobs every month just to keep up with the demand from high school and college grads. When we lose jobs as we have experienced during the past several years, many more stay at home with their parents who are barely able to survive themselves.

This crisis is growing every day, and for our government to add unnecessary social programs onto the stimulus plan is a crime of huge proportions. Their primary effort should be put into job creation; not salvaging mismanaged companies.

AMEN.......this is what happens when power corrupts, and corporate power has fully corrupted Washington. The people will get sick of it, will rise up and overthrow the regime.

@hawkeye10,
I'm not so sure there will be much change in our elected representatives even though most people do not have confidence in what our government is doing to solve this crisis. We will just have to wait until the next election cycle to find out.

People have lost confidence with Obama being elected. Why work, when he gives all the money to people that don't work, that come here illegally, and then tax the producers to give to the non-producers? On a related matter, I predicted this, Obama declares war on the energy industry. The one industry that has prospered, and that has been trying to enhance our ability to be more self sufficient, the guy attacks it. This is incredible, but nobody can claim they weren't warned about this disaster of a president. We would have had a recession without Obama, but not like this. People have lost all confidence in government in regard to the government leaving them alone, leaving free enterprise alone. Nothing is off limits now, Obama considers everything that anybody does as belonging to him and to whomever he wants to give it.

more importantly, why follow the rules and manage with competence when failure to do so not only carries no sanction but brings hand outs of cash when the crash hits???

People no longer trust people that makes claims like that.

The 6.2% drop in GDP was when Bush was President okie. You need to pull your head out of your ass before you scream so loud everyone realizes that's where you put it. Trying to blame Obama who has been in office for a month is ridiculous.

Say, okie.. weren't you one of those that has talked about the Clinton recession that occurred March to November of 2001. So now you are blaming Obama for a recession when it isn't even March in his first term.

@okie,
The War on Energy argument is ridiculous okie.

So, lets see.. the oil producers want tax breaks when times are bad. Wait.. they want money to be handed to them after it is taken from other tax payers? How dare they? Oh.. it's OK when it's oil I guess.

Couldn't have said it more succinctly or clearly:

@parados,
Parados, where have a blamed the entire recession on Obama? I do believe the stock plunge has been due in part on Obama being elected. As relates the stock market to the economy, not a 1 to 1 relationship, sure, but I would hope even you would admit that the economy is influenced by consumer confidence. If people are hesitant to invest or hire, or buy now, due to uncertainties and lack of confidence in the future, it affects the economy, whether you like it or not.

I believe there would have been a recession without Obama, sure, no question about that, however, if McCain had been elected, the reaction to it and the proposed remedies would be alot different. The threat of a veto would have forced the Democrats in Congress to actually have been bipartisan, and a stimulus bill or bills would have looked alot different, and I am here to tell you that I believe things would be alot better right now than they are. both stock market and the optimism in business. As it is, Obama is a disaster, for one big reason, people know he is a socialist or Marxist at heart, and so why invest, why work, etc.? So people are sitting back and waiting to see whats next down the pike. Nervous, thats how I would describe the business world.

You're right. I'm surprised somebody on Saturday Night Live hasn't come up with a new character based on out of touch disgruntled and discredited tools like Okie yet.

Obama is a disaster, because Bush destroyed our country - completely!

How does one recover from complete economic and political disaster, okie? We all know you're the expert on economics and politics.

Amazing, that you are crying for the industry which has posted higher profits than any other over the last several years. These people do not NEED tax breaks; when you posting dozens of billions of profits per quarter, why do you deserve a tax break?

Polling has shown Obama's approval levels, and public support of his plans, to remain essentially the same since the election. You say 'people have lost confidence,' but what you mean is that you don't agree with his decisions personally. Nobody gives two shits for the opinion of a bunch of Republicans at this point, however; that's what happens when your plans fail and your party gets voted out of office.
