I must say,
TofL, that's a rather surprising choice. Pitts was a fine dramatic actress during the silent era, best known for her role in Erich von Stroheim's
Greed. Here she is with co-star Gibson Gowland:
When talkies arrived, she switched to light comedies, and was paired for a while with Thelma Todd in a series of comedy shorts for Hal Roach. Her career lasted into the 1950s (she was in the "Francis the Talking Mule" films), and her
last film credit is as a switchboard operator in
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (who
wasn't in that movie?).
A terrific character actress and comedienne, to be sure, but I've never thought of her as a great beauty. I'd take Louise Brooks any day over Pitts, but I must admit that ZaSu had her charms.
