What's the best kind of snips to cut metal coils in a mattress?

Hi. I sleep on an old mattress but some of the metal coils in the mattress have pierced the top of the mattress and stick me when I am trying to sleep. I need to trim the coils so they stop sticking me. What's the best kind of snips to get?

Please help. Thank you.

Please help - I want to order the snips off of eBay or Amazon or any other online retailer that sells snips cheap ASAP.

@JGoldman10,
Heavy Duty Diagonal Cutters – make sure they're big enough because they make small ones for precision work which won't cut spring steel

@hightor,
Thank you for responding. Mattress coils are made of spring steel?

@JGoldman10,
wikipedia wrote:
Spring steel is a name given to a wide range of steels used in the manufacture of different products, including swords, saw blades, springs and many more. These steels are generally low-alloy manganese, medium-carbon steel or high-carbon steel with a very high yield strength. This allows objects made of spring steel to return to their original shape despite significant deflection or twisting.

@hightor,
Hi. I was told by a vendor on eBay that I should buy high leverage diagonal cutters. That person said:

"These pliers are designed for cutting harder wires and materials, including nails and various types of wire, with high-performance precision."

Will ANY high leverage diagonal cutters cut mattress coils?

I'd choose ones with 10" handles as opposed to 8"; that will give you more leverage. But be prepared to pay $15 - $40, which is too bad if you're only going to use them for one job. Can you borrow a pair?

@Region Philbis,
Hi. I don't have money for a new mattress. I want to trim the coils sticking out of the mattress I have, that's why I asked about what tool should I get to cut them with.

@hightor,
I don't want to spend more than $20 for a pair of cutters. I'd like to get a pair of cutters for $10 or less.

I went elsewhere and it was suggested that I buy a hacksaw.

In your opinion is it better to buy a hacksaw or a pair of cutters to cut mattress coils with?

I just want to hurry up and buy SOMETHING to cut the mattress coils with.

Or should I buy mini bolt cutters, as was suggested to me elsewhere? Mini bolt cutters cut padlocks.

Please let me know. Thank you.

@hightor,
This is a link to a pic of the pair of cutters I eventually ending up buying off of eBay:

As I said in another thread, I don't know how to properly convert image files from Flickr into jpg files and upload the images here - Flickr reformatted their site since the last time I ever used their site.

The eBay vendor I bought the pair of cutters from confirmed it will cut the coils in my mattress. The coils are between 2 and 3 mm thick.

@JGoldman10,
I think diagonal cutters would have been a better tool because you can approach the cut from the side of the coil. The end cutters you bought will do the job but you have to use them at an awkward angle.

That's why I didn't recommend using a hacksaw. It will definitely work but it's easier with plier-type snips since you don't have to hold the coil when making the cut. When possible, try to use the right tool for the job.

As far as post an image goes, when you find an image you want to share, put your cursor on the image and right click. This will bring up a small menu of choices. Go down the list and when you see "copy image link" click on that and you can then paste the link in your dialogue box on A2K.

When I mentioned a hacksaw I thought you wanted to take a mattress apart.

No, I just want to trim the coils that are sticking out of the top of my mattress. They stick me when I'm lying down and trying to sleep.

like i said, get a new mattress.

clipping is only a temporary fix.

you will have to replace it eventually, so you might as well bite the bullet now before Trump enacts a global Mattress Tariff...
