Some are all of these awards will be bestowed, I understand, with the nominees already up on the stage (there was also a rumor they would stay seated and the Oscar would be brought to them). Whether they will be allowed to say thanks is still a mystery.

I really think the song from "The Motorcyles" is poignant and authentic Latino and just having seen the music documentary on Buena Vista Social Club, I could be a bit biased here.

Totally agree with LW on the Other Side of the River song from Motorcycle. I heard the composer interviewed on a local radio jazz show. He played and sang it himself. Amazingly authentic and moving.

lightwiz, why do you think "Born into Brothels" will beat interrnational hit "Super Size me"?

[BTW, thanks: I have followed your lead and changed my blind picks for short films in my contest -and sound editing too, since this is a category I can hardly judge-]

I agree with LW re: Born into Brothels. It touches a nerve much more so than Supersize Me. The latter was, indeed, an international hit, but Brothels is a far more sensitive film and the Academy always like to think of itself as caring and sensitive, rather than merely attuned to the box office "gate."

"Super Size Me" is quite a feat for a new documentarian but it doesn't delve into the deeply profound condition of humanity like "Born Into Brothels." SSM did make me drive in the other direction everytime I even thought of eating fast food.

You did better than me (13 out of 24).

I assumed that, since "Mar Adentro" was a cinch for foreign film, "Million Dollar Baby" did not stand a chance, both films having a key subject in common.
In an afterthought, it was quite a stupid assumption... to make the foreign film dictate the top Oscar.

Loved Chris Rock's comment about Michael Moore and "Super Size Me". "He's already done the research". Laughing

I only saw about 45 minutes of it. What were the highlights?

Hillary Swank's dress - wow. In the opening monologue, Rock skewered several actors, saying there were only four real stars in Hollywood. He specifically mentioned Nicole Kidman, and Jude Law. Later, Sean Penn came up to give out an award and he bashed Rock for singling out Law, apparently one of his buddies.

Prince wore a pink suit. Johnny Depp looked totally gay in a blue velvet getup that looked as if he found it in the Peter Pan costume trunk.

The thank you's were just that, nothing spectacular. Early on they had all the nominees up on stage so they didn't have to wait for them to walk up out of the audience. For the final four or five awards, they did it the traditional way.

Well, I loved Jamie Foxx's acceptance speech. Made me cry.

Sorry, Bella. I didn't predict. Clint Easwood was fantastic, I thought.

And oh yeah, Barbara Streisand gave the "Best Picture" award to Clint Eastwood. It was a real luv-fest up there.

I'l try to find Jamie Foxx's acceptance speech. Didn't see Johnny Depp. But I saw everything else you mention, lucky me! (I'll always love Prince.) Agreed about Hilary Swank's dress, loved it (and she looked great in it.) I saw the Sean Penn thing, didn't get it. Fell flat.

Interesting about having 'em up on stage -- that makes sense. I mean how much time is wasted with the reaction shot, the kissing and hugging people close by, then the long walk? (On the other hand there's stuff like Roberto Benigni making it interesting...)

Oh and Clint Eastwood's expression when Hilary Swank won -- and effusively thanked him -- was great. (The breaking in at the end to thank her publicist was weird though.) (Oh, did she thank poor hapless Chad this time? I don't remember.)
