I am looking everywhere, trying to find some info on Bomb Defusers. How much do they get paid? Some pros and cons of'course! What about their skills - what do they need to know/learn in order to be on the bomb squad - ? Anything else?

Thanks alot!

I had a Social Studies teacher a few years ago who worked as a land mine defuser for the military. As far as his stories went he did not make more than any other recruit. If you were to do it privately or for the government outside of the military it may be a different story though. Thats all I know about the subject. Hope i helped to shed some light.

I dunno of any other way to get into the field than through military Explosive Ordnance Demolition (EOD)trainin'. The field is among what are known as Special Operations (SO or SpecOps), exclusively the purview of elite, career-oriented, highly trained personnel. EOD specialists typically will be members of Ranger, SEAL, Special Forces, or Scout-Sniper units - truly the cream of the combat crop. As with any elite units, there are far more candidates for the training than there are positions for graduates of the programs, but the nature of the training whittles the field down to the select few who have what it takes. There are always openings, but getting all the way there is a real challenge. The civilian market for experienced EOD personnel is both lucrative and highly competitive - there aren't a lot of 'em to go around.

If you're really interested, here are a couple options:

US NAVY EOD

US Army EOD

What the heck - give a try - you might get a real bang out of it. Be careful, though .... you don't want it blowin' up in your face.

Hey, I heard a neat story about a fella in the second world war. He was with a unit charged with disinformation. Anyway, they had these inflatable tanks, guns, and so forth, that they set up to deceive the enemy. When his kids asked him what he did in the war, he usually looked modest and said, "Oh, I blew up a lot of tanks."

A while back I read "Twelve Seconds to Live" by Douglas Reeman (spelling?). It's all about unexploded bomb and mine diffusers in England during early 1944. Not many of the charachters in the book survived.

I have no idea how accurate the book is, but it may be worthwhile to read.

A few years back, there was a TV series - UXB, I think was the title - about a British ordnance disposal team ... mighta been based on that book.

Sounds like it would be a mind blowing experience!

Just don't believe what they say about the red cord.

I am an EOD tech and what the guy was saying about the SpecOps is only true in the Navy. It is a very tough field and the drop out rate at the school is 60 percent. There are a lot of opportunities once you make it through the school, but that is the trick.
