PRIME Minister John Howard has admitted backing down on a pre-election commitment not to significantly boost the number of Australian troops in Iraq.
Mr Howard yesterday also refused to commit to a deadline for bringing Australia's new and existing contingents of soldiers home.
"I certainly acknowledge that I stated before the election, because it was the position before the election, that we didn't plan any major increase in our commitment," he said.
"I said that on a number of occasions, and that was a fair statement of the position."

No surprise from him.
Thing is, much as I hate it (and this is an old argument between us, as you knwo, Dys!) I hafta kind of agree with him.
You invade some country, you owe it.
Here's a charming thing - I listen to radio as I drive to and from work - and people were calling in - mainly very anti, as it happens - anyway, one fella rang in and said his dad and grand-dad would be rolling in their graves at the idea of Australian soldiers protecting Japanese troops - unless it was in the same manner as Japanese troops had protected Australian prisoners in WW II.
I hope our current bout of hatreds die a little sooner than that one has....
