The Indian Summer

There is no positive origin of the term Indian summer but it dates back to the earlt 19th century meaning any late summer good weather, the indians used to take this time as good hunting times,so it may have to do with this. It is a term used in the U.K. very often.

Only thing I am sure is that the Indian summer comes, after you have put away all your summer clothes.

Region's info and mine are similar, but I thought the addition from other countries was interesting:

"spell of warm weather after the first frost," first recorded 1778, Amer.Eng., perhaps so called because it was first noted in regions inhabited by Indians, or because the Indians first described it to the Europeans. No evidence connects it with the color of fall leaves or a season of Indian attacks on settlements. It is the Amer.Eng. version of British All-Hallows summer, Fr. été de la Saint-Martin (feast day Nov. 11), etc. Also colloquial was St. Luke's summer (or little summer), period of warm weather occurring about St. Luke's day (Oct. 18).

One of my very knowledgable friends said that Indian Summer was really a warm spell in December. There is a lovely song about Indian Summer.

I know in Eastern England "Indian Summer" is known as "Viking summer". Evidently the furious Norsemen got their crops in and then went a-raiding.

It is exactly because of that song that I started this thread, as the song said that the Indian summer exists only in North America.
