@sdfish,
I don't understand the question. Tell us what the blinds were, and how much you bet. Also, were you sitting at the big blind position?

Generally you need to bet at least twice the big blind.

@sdfish,
There is the "one chip rule". If you put in a single chip with no verbal indication that you want to bet, it counts as a call (and Amy additional value is returned).

I dont know if that is what you are talking about.

@maxdancona,
blinds 1 dollar small 2 dollar big. I bet 8 bucks without announcing anything, just threw the chips in. The question is do I have to put 2 more dollars in for the big blind.

@sdfish,
If I understand correctly

small blind posted $1
big blind posted $2
you threw in $8

You are correct. That is a valid bet (that is 4x the BB). No, you don't need to put in any additional money unless you are raised.

That happens in casinos all of the time.

I'm betting you put in $5 and said "I raise $5", in which case they are correct. You'd need to "call the $2 big blind and raise you $5" ie. cover the big blind and put in a total of $7 to effectively raise $5.

"Call and raise 5".

@ekename,
No I just threw in chips. And I agree with your answer but that's not the issue. Really no big issue just I called BS on throwing in the extra 2 bucks after setting my original bet not announced.

@ekename,
No! Ekename. You can not say "call and raise 3".

What you are suggesting is a string bet. It is against the rules. In any real poker room or casino, if you did that your raise would be nuliffied (turned into a call) and you would be warned. If you did it reapeatedly you would be penalized.

The rule is that you need to make a bet in a single action.

If someone says "raise 8" it will be interpreted as "raise to $8". I play tournaments one or two times a month in a poker room, or Foxwoods (and occasionally other casinos). It has always been that way.

I would just count this as "house rules". Different games have slightly different ways of playing. As long as the rules are well established and apply to everyone, then you can play by them. If at this game you have to say... "I bet a total of $8"; just do that every time.

If the rules at this game keep changing, then I would simply play elsewhere.

Either way, it isn't worth fighting about.
