Im a senior in HS getting ready to go to college, and for the longest time Ive wanted to go to med school...i still really want to. As you probably all know, parents influence decisions alot in your life as a son/daughter in terms of what careers to get into and such, and when they heard i wanted to go to med school, needless to say they were thrilled. But throughout HS i have been involved with my town Emergency Medical Services and have just become addicted to that feeling knowing someone puts their life in your hands. And i suppose being a doctor is the same but idk why i feel EMS is different, i just like the feeling of being the first person there. So because of this, I have really contemplated joining FDNY or NYPD (i live in a suberb about 30 miles from NYC) either as a medic or a firefighter. And lets admit it, the pay sucks...if you want to become financially secure with a family and thats what i hope to have one day. Also, since this war in Iraq, ive wanted to join the marine corps. I feel like its something i need to do, I appreciate everything the military is doing for us but I cant stand the feeling of sitting back while others take care of the dirty work...i want to help. So really my problem is that my parents discourage these careers because there really isnt much money in it. Ironic because my dad is a marine col. He still doesnt want me to join...Idk my dream is to go to medical school and become a surgeon, but I feel like id get much much more satisfaction in one of the jobs i listed above...theres just an undescribable amount of respect i have for those individuals especially since ive worked with them in HS...so my question to u guys is, how do i talk to my parents about this...i still would LOVE to go to med school and i know you heart and mind needs to be in that 200% or else ur not gonna make it, but idk theres jsut sumthing pulling me to FDNY, NYPD, or the military....please help me let me hear your opinions
As a mother of four grown children...each one of my kids said they were going to do this or that and each one of them changed their minds along the way. One is now a hairdresser but when her kids go to school I reckon she will fulfil her dream of becoming an interior designer.
Another daughter was going to be a photo journalist and now she is looking into becoming a veterinary lab assistant ( which makes sense 'coz she always loved animals so much!)
My oldest son, we he wasn't ever going to do much of anything. He is a line cook at a ski resort and is looking into going into the culinary arts and maybe taking some business admin courses...who knows that the future holds for him?
The youngest (17) has no clue but I know that life willl unfold and he will develop an interest (besides baseball) and pursue it.
IMO do what your heart tells you to. There is always time to do the med school thing when you are ready to. They say that people have more than one career in a lifetime these days so there is nothing to say you can't do it all.
Those are just my long winded thoughts...help at all?
I chose the Navy over college for a couple of reasons. I knew I could get into a college, but I was concerned with paying for it. I also wanted to see the world...and I have.
You really have to do what you feel is best for you. If being a doctor is what would make you happy GO for it! If you want to see what life is like besides that goal, try that too! EMS is a good way to do both. If you want to help people and enjoy that fast paced lifestyle of a Firefighter (come from a family of firefighters so I know how interesting and challenging that career is) but also want to persue a career in medicine EMS is the way to go. You get firsthand triage knowledge that can be invaluable in a medical career.
Just my advice. Either way, follow your heart. It'll lead you to all the places you belong. Just keep in mind there will be stumbling blocks along the way but if you stick to it, you'll get there.
