HABIB - released from US detention, but still "suspect".

So, has his passport been returned yet?

Maybe after his book deal....

Lol! May well happen - to get rid of him.

More and more dirty - and formerly denied - government business is coming out because of his continued speaking out.

Guilty or innocent, he is saying a lot of things that seem to be turning out to be true...

Well, when people claim things that once investigated turn out to be true, why not believe him?

I believe the ones supported by a former senior Australian official, who has been disgusted into speaking out, yes.

Shrugs.

But believe what you will, JW.

Sigh. Now I expect we shall have the usual American crap of Repub vs Democrat breaking out here. Is this thread, too, going to become an American domestic battleground?

Oh well, one can always step around it.

Thankee Cyclops.

That was gracious of you.

But - please don't disappear.

So far, as far as I can recall, it was just JW coming in and dropping meaningless gibes from time to time, while the discussion continued - one hand clapping and all.

My point was just that I was fearful that return gibes would lead to the usual predictable stuff that happens everywhere on American politics threads - and often contaminates non-American ones - of sniping between American domestic opponents taking over.

Please do not retire from discussion - I was just fearful of the usual usual happening!

(Not that I can stop it)

LOL! What discussion was happening? It was just more weeping and gnashing over the big, bad USA from some disgruntled lefties as far as I could see.

Smile

PS...Keep Habib over there...please.

And it hasn't yet dawned on you that the US government has some answering to do about this issue? Are you living under a rock, or something... ? Confused

No, I do not believe the US has any answering to do. He should still be locked away.

... according to you, McGentrix. However, the US authorities didn't appear to have a decent case after 3 years of holding him in detention.

I'm (still) quite sure, Australia has got a legal system and an independent judicary.

Just read through the thread (needed a coffee break halfway through Very Happy ). Interesting ideas and comments.

Why do allegedly democratic governments insist on lying to their bosses (us)? If they told us the truth we might even be able to give them some reasonably well thought out instructions. We might be able to tell them that we'd prefer that the rule of law as we all understand it is paramount and above the machinations of government. But if they told us why they wanted to do things like torture individuals, keep them in detention without facing judicial authorities for several years an the rest, we might even see the point and agree to it. But they had better be pretty persuasive because torture and detention might happen to any one of us.

The Habib issue is an example of how "democratic" (what a joke) governments can defy the very laws they themselves approve of. Habib might well be a dangerous bastard, well if he is then tell us on what grounds he is. We can take it I'm sure. If he isn't a dangerous bastard then for crying out loud forget about him. The Australian Government has disgraced itself on this issue. Mind you it has priors for outrageous behaviour so let's not all suck our breath in in shock. As voters we have to actively mistrust our governments (spare me, I'm sounding like a right wing nutter libertarian) because if we don't keep an eye on them they'll screw us.
