@Dutchy,
So you're quite comfortable at the thought of an eruption, out of the blue, then, Dutchy? Wink
It's a strange idea, isn't it, that we're 3000 years overdue for heaps of volcanic eruptions all over the eastern states?

@Dutchy,
I don't know, Dutchy. I posted a coooeeee on his Cairns thread this morning, but no response. It's strange that he's not even on any of the music threads (not that I can see, anyway.)

He pointed the bone? Really? I wonder what that was about? Laughing

@Dutchy,
Me, too, Dutchy. I'm tired, too. I've just been waiting for this darned corned beef to finish cooking in my slow cooker! (Should've put in on to cook much earlier than I did.)

Night night!

Sydneysiders are being warned that a huge dust cloud will continue to affect the city through the day, after they woke to an eerie red dawn this morning.

Quote:
The huge dust storm which has settled over the city and much of New South Wales was carried east overnight by gale-force winds of up to 100kph.

This morning the weather bureau said the dust cloud was expected to hang around until late afternoon.

Senior forecaster Barry Hanstrum says more high winds are on the way and could cause more damage.... <cont>

"The winds won't drop off until later today and when they do we think that the dust haze will start to clear," he said.

Red dust over everything here too (about 100km south of Sydney). Just heard a guy on ABC expressing the amount of sediment that has been moved around in the millions of tonnes.

As British science fiction writer John Wyndham might have said, when people in Sydney wake up to a sky from Mars, something is seriously wrong somewhere.

Quote:
All future climate predictions point to a warmer, drier inland and an increase in the unusually strong winds that carried the dust storm from the South Australian border to the east coast.

However, this does not necessarily mean that today's dust storm is a direct product of climate change.

Although weather conditions today are extremely rare, such storms have occasionally hit the east coast before, and any single weather event can be attributed to random factors that could occur with or without the effect of human-induced climate change.

In the nation's interior, dust storms are a daily event.

It is the natural consequence of a very long drought, and the probable onset of another El Nino effect. The storm today is unusual in that particles were carried as far as the coast.

What seems certain is that future dust storms will get more frequent and probably bigger, as the climate warms. Along with other firmly grounded projections such as an increase in bushfires and a drop in rainfall, we can expect more dust storms in the coming decades as a consequence of climate change. ...<cont>

This is a side issue to the Oz east coast's dust storm, but it's one that interests me. Out of curiousity, I checked out the usual UK/US news sites I frequent to see what, if any, coverage these storms (especially in Sydney) had received. The BBC/Guardian/Observer sites gave prominent front page coverage (with pictures & video links, etc). Nothing at all on the NYTimes site. The NYT's headlines concentrated pretty much exclusively on US issues. While the BBC/Guardian/Observer sites looked way beyond their own national borders & interests. Interesting, I thought. It certainly tells me something! Wink

But then, I have noticed this before, often. It's just that I'm a bit of a media/news junkie & these things really fascinate me! Smile

@msolga,
I just checked out Rupert's News of the World (UK). Nothing has changed. Business as usual. The usual stuff. No news of the world to speak of! Laughing
