Would Mussolini be proud?

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."

-- Benito Mussolini

Here's a list of the corporations that have kicked in about $30 million dollars for the inauguration of George W. Bush.

I am sure he would be proud of the liberals in America that keep trying to compare America's government to facism.

I didn't say we were there yet, nor that we would ever get there, McG. Unclench your sphincter for a minute and relax. I just posted a question for consideration.

"The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it comes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group,"

FDR

Let's keep on our toes; shall we, Kicky me boy?

If we are to stick to history, there's an important difference. The key word in Mussolini's quote is "merger". What you have in the USA in an alliance.
In Fascism, the State is everything.

That is an excellent point. And in America, it could never get to a point of an actual merging of the two...I don't think. But in my opinion, the alliance is getting stronger and stronger. That can't be good, can it? And what can be done about it?

It can be a good thing. As a matter of fact it's one of the features that has made us a prosperous nation....as opposed to Russia, say; where the absence of a corporate entity doomed them to a dank future.

It depends on your priorities, kicky.
Do you think it's individual freedoms threathened by the State? Then try to do something about the Patriot Act.
Do you think it's excessive leniency towards big corporations, vis a vis small business and the average worker? Then try to do something about taxation, white collar law enforcement and regulations.
None of this can be done on an individual basis.

There would be no big corporations if we didn't buy their product.

But most of us want it both ways. We go buy products of large corporations because they are cheaper and easier to find. Then when we want somebody to blame we turn around and point fingers at the same corporation.

Didn't Mussolini hold rallies with soldiers dressed as Roman legionnaires? Would anyone have objected if the much-maligned costume of Prince Harry had been a toga, or a Polynesian grass-skirt?

What were the other party guests wearing - far as I know they wore garb suitable to the theme (native and colonial) but nobody thought any but the Afrika Corps uniform objectionable. Leader of the opposition Howard is no Disraeli btw - Disraeli had the brains not to comment on idiotic subjects!

Sorry, the Polynesians didn't try to eradicate a whole religion...and as far as the Romans? Well, maybe they wanted to...they just didn't have the means....

Panzade - the only cannibals (systematic, not driven to cannibalism by direst necessity) currently inhabit Papua-New Guinea.

The hysteria about Harry's outfit is hypocritical at best.

hypocritical?

He showedd an extreme lapse in judgement and has been called out about it. He apologized.

McG - what did he apologize FOR? Should we maybe ban all crosses, starting with the cross of Malta, a variant of which was worn by Harry? What did the German Africa Corps do to deserve this criticism in your view?

Don't be coy Helen. It's about the swastika and the ovens. Poor judgement...it's just too recent. Give it a couple of centuries.
