What does "American soul" mean here? The link there wrongly jumps to United States.

Context:

Direction Records (British label)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Direction record label was a subsidiary label established by CBS Records in the UK in spring 1967. It primarily released American soul and R&B recordings in the UK, but also issued records by British and Jamaican artists. Among its most successful releases were those by Sly & the Family Stone, The Bandwagon, and The Chambers Brothers.[1][2]

@oristarA,
"American soul" refers to a style of music performed by black artists and directed primarily towards black audiences but having great crossover appeal as well.
