Practical shoes:

I once dated a woman who was slightly taller than I was. This being in
the Seventies, I bought a pair of shoes with stacked heels and thick
soles. Sad, really.

In the course of a later amour, I found myself in Earth Shoes (elevator
shoes with a "down" button).

Now my feet are bad in oh, so many ways.
And my shoes are practical.

I've been wearing platform shoes since 1972 and I'm not about to get short again, age or no.

Another reason to hate Osama - now he wants to do away with our high-heeled Manolos, if the WSJ can be believed:
__________________________________________________________

"Our Peggy Noonan, writing on yesterday's evacuation from the Capitol because of an aviation scare, quotes an unnamed Senate staffer: "I was wearing open-toed, two-inch heels. Is this the official end of high heels in Washington? I think it might be, yeah." The Washington Post reports that "House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was literally lifted out of her pinkish high heels by Capitol Police in a hallway outside the House chamber."

Maybe John Kerry** was on to something with those flip-flops.

Three or even four pair of Manolos would surely be no bigger mouthful than this bitty sentence portion.

The Frying Pan is a bar/outdoor grill/ dance floor/ dock located at the North End of the Chelsea Piers at West 23rd Street. Depending on the night there is something, or nothing, going on. We like to climb up the ladders on the fireboat next door and have a drink and a burger and look out on the Hudson River.

The other night we watched a couple of water taxis practice some kind of emergency move. (Head down river at full speed and perform a sharp turn to port, swing around to a full 180 and then gun it back up river.) Meanwhile overhead the Trump helicopter was cruising back and forth getting it's picture taken by a second helicopter and the local kayak club members set out in an outrigger and the Circleline putted by.

Nobody waved.

Twas, and always is, a bit windy. So bring something to throw on. The Blessing of the Tugboat Fleet is on June 9th starting at five pm. It's an amazing thing to see.

You're in New York, right? Did you expect friendly? Many New Yorkers are!
How close were you to them, the boat, I mean? I sailed up the Hudson quite a few years ago, when a friend was running for re-election in the State Assemblyman in Trenton, from my district. This guy was well-heeled and had big backing! Caviar, champagne, good wines, cheeses fruit and salmon. That's just some of what I remember. The yacht stopped in front of the Statue of Liberty and played the Star Spangled Banner, I cried so hard, because for the first time, I felt like an American! I felt good, proud and humbled by the experience. My friend died in 2002 after a long battle with illnesses. He died in office and I helped his aide clear out his personal effects. I have a great glossy black/white photo and a couple of books, office pads with his name on them. He was like an uncle to me. Know what? I Love New York! My husband is from Staten Island, Port Richmond HS. Lived on Bradley Ave and was fond of Jones Beach, as a teen. Me, I'm from New Orleans, the Big Easy, the Crescent City, the place time forgot! Been here in Monmouth for 35 years. I miss N.O. but I only have 2 sisters living there, now and a host of cousins. Everybody's passed on, but I still consider it home. Love Jersey though! Don't ask why? Over the years, I've cultivated quite a few friends, raised my kids, watched them all go to state colleges, Stockton, Glassboro and Monmouth. I'm four blocks from the boardwalk, the cherry blossoms are beautiful, even prettier than Washington, our park has 2 new black swans and we're consdered SoHo South! Asbury Park is where I am after living in Neptune for 20 years. So much for me!

I just spent the most marvellous 45 minutes, reading from about page 70 on - and looking at some of the pix that I hadn't really seen before.

What a great trip!

Thanks to everybody who made it the trip it was - from the hamburgers who took care of the dogs - to all the great friends who suggested places to see, foods to try - to everyone I met on the trip.

Thanks - it was fantastic!

I've long been a fan of the Brit painter, Beryl Cook.
Just found this pic of hers entitled "Bryant Park"

Laughed.

Reminds me of the screamer on the bench outside our studio, oh.... but then she was helped. More problematic was the fellow who arrived with his briefcase every day and stayed all day, murmuring. He had, luckily, a family. Our bench never seemed to be a simple bench, but I suppose it was in intervening times.

Then there was the day the slurpies came in through our louver windows, onto our drafted plans...

It worked out ok, but by the hair of our skinny chin chins.

I lied, or I storymade. I confuse circumstances plus some circumstances weld together as pretty good stories..

so, it wasn't a slurpy.

It was the mentally disabled son of the owner aiming the hose at the windows...

which is worse, since we had a heart for him, but also our multi hour hand drawn plans, this being in the mid eighties.

Sigh.

I forget what this building is by now, but at this point it is serious expensive building. In our time, we had a really good architectural designer, a good photographer, an er strange but er strange person, what can I say, and us, with, for at least a few years us subleasing a space from two clothing designers and we the tenants, landscape architects.
Oh, yeah, and Basic Threads started there at that time. A friend played a friend in tennis all the time...

I chuckle whenever I see their sweats in the stores. They of course probably chuckle to the bank, but they hit the ground running, early.

I lied again. A slurpy did come through the window once, but didn't do any damage. The hose, aforementioned, did.
