before things formally got started, there were dance lessons
Love the dapper guy's yellow+ blue outfit -- 'specially the pants!
(That looks sooooo fun... did you guys dance?)

I think they might have been practicing for
the blessing of the fleet ... NYT link
Quote:Three stout red ships muscled north along the East River. They seemed to grow larger against the backdrop of Governors Island as they approached Pier 17.
Two chaplains, a bagpipe band, fire officials and a throng of tourists awaited their arrival.
The three ships were leading a procession of eight New York Fire Department boats in a longtime ritual: the blessing of the fleet.
"When a fireboat gets blessed, you have assurance from above that everything is going to be O.K.," said Lt. Brian E. Coughlin, 45, of the department's marine division.
Since man first took to the sea, sailors have sought divine protection for their ships. The blessing of the fleet, traditionally bestowed by a Roman Catholic priest, dates at least to 16th-century Spain, and continues today as fishermen set off each season to hunt their dangerous catch.

I'm not a
click ... Vogue photographer ..., so check out what The Sartorialist made of the same event.
(did I know I was taking a photo of a Vogue photographer taking a photo? errr no)
I tried and tried and tried to get a really clear photo of these two women - check out the feet of the one in the blue dress - one of the two was always a blur of movement
Oh, I love these, ehBeth....
Sart's* been showing some more (haven't looked since this morning, I tend to check that blog almost daily anyway for various reasons), but I like your photos because of the action - even stopped, it's implied, action in wait...
*Sartorialist is a guy, it's his own gig, and he does features for various publications - don't think that is him with the camera across the crowd, unless I'm just not seeing him.
I'll be back with another aside-link on gov's island in a minute.
Noddy monitors the crowd action from a shady spot
(Not to say that this Sart/thing wasn't for Vogue).
Noddy-in-Charge, like it!
ossoB - thanks! I'll be curious to see what you think of one of my favourite pix once I post it. It wasn't what I was aiming for - but then I looked at it again ...
~~~~~~~
I haven't posted the Sartorialist photo yet - you'll recognize it as soon as I do.
That's Witold Rybcznski on the proposed designs for making much of governors' island into a park (article has slide show). I've looked at the proposals quickly, n'sure which if any I like, speaking as one who hasn't been there.
ehBeth,
It's not the pix we appreciate and love - it's you....... So, what the heck about the pix!!!
I really thought that would be an adopted idea from snobbish England for a picnic when I saw these persons waiting with us for the fery
ehBeth already showed with her photos excellently the atmoshere - so there's not much to add from me, besides perhaps some alternative takes:
Those are great shots, Walter. I especially like the tatoo of Che Guevara on the ladies back......
Like the flapper in the yellow hat dancing with the toddler...
That's a great shot of the crowd waiting for the ferry to arrive, Walter! The lighting's perfect, the composition flawless. You feel you're right there, waiting with them.
