All a matter of perspective, ossoB.

Remember the "walking distance to the Staten Island Ferry" discussion?
Anything under 8 miles is comfortable walking distance to my feet.

Talked to General Lee about his day walking around Central Park the other week. As he and I have had a couple of 10 - 12 hour walking/eating days together here, I think we've sorted the distance thing pretty well. Very Happy

I'm not saying you can't walk it, I wouldn't say that; I just might expect you to have eaten some of your lunch while getting there. Well, maybe you're a purist and never snack while walking down the street. Anyway, point being there might be an equally interesting market up near the park (who knows? not me) or an interesting park by Chelsea Market. Whatever, have fun.

The olive bread is hard to find. I've discovered that there aren't as many good bakeries left in the city as I'd originally thought. I am sooooo going to Amy's.

Ah.

We have it here (Brio) and we had it in Venice (I think it was from La Brea Bakery, Nancy Silverton's place). Spoiled olive bread brat I am.

I go to a place in Kensington Market called My Market Bakery. I adore their olive bread, with unsalted butter and Quesa Blanco. I'm lookin' to check out the international competition. Very Happy

Nancy Silverton and her bakery are pretty well regarded, among some foodies anyway, but I doubt that Brio is known except in our redwoods surrounded area.
Hmmm, maybe we need to arrange an international bakeoff -
I suppose some parisien bakeries would want to get in on it.... or do they ever put olives in their bread?

<semi-apologies for tangent>

ooh. you go to Chelsea Market, get your olive bread and some good cheese and something to drink, you walk out the East end doors and walk over to 14th and Eighth, catch the C to 79th Street Central Park, cross Central Park West and you're in the Park and on the grassy hills and shady parts of the Ramble in about thirty minutes from the time you folded the bag shut at Amy's.

ehBeth,
I can't find any of my pals who know the name of the little deli with the challah bread french toast and Taylor ham, but from the looks of things you will have lots of great company to see that you don't go hungry or get bored. I look forward to hearing your reports.

Has anyone mentioned Wo Hop yet ?
as in 17 Mott St. ?
