EhBeth is not a splurging woman. She's thrifty, infatigable, good-humored with excellent taste. She's also exhausting.

In spite of Hamberger's warnings, you should consult with Beth. She's good at this.

My suggestion: Walter should ask ehbeth's help for shopping. At the same time, they need to be in contact with hamburger by cell phone. Hamburger could restrain ehbeth from any extravagant impulses. Smile

hamburger's the one who taught me to shop. Extravagance isn't on the agenda. Getting the shopkeeper to shake your hand because you've been such a strong negotiator is always the goal.

Walter - make sure Mrs. Walter sends you with a good list - we need details if we're going to do this well - and efficiently. I can do two days of power-shopping in about 3 hours

ehbeth's shopping forays are executed in a war-like fashion .

1) carry out reconnaissance

2) put mobile force at the forefront (park in front of store)

3) execute precision raid

4) withdraw after action successfully completed

5) survey loot after arriving back in camp

(some of ebeth's genes probably originated with the saxon raiders who were well-known for their quick actions in capturing merchandise)

I believe that!

When I was a child, my father told me that our family name (Wandel) was a variation of the name of a European tribe (Vandals).

when the vandals reached carthage in north-africa , they sure didn't leave much - they made a thorough job of destroying it .
when we visited carthage a few years ago , we were not allowedd to take any photographs at the site because the president's palace was right next to the excavation site !
so we bought some nice postcards for $ 1 for ten ! and brought a little money into the economy .

btw if we misbehaved as children , our mother would say :
"ihr benehmt euch wie die vandalen ! " (you behave like vandals) .
so it seems that the destructions the vandals had left in marching through europe had not been forgotten .

Hamburger--

Why are you limiting yourself to a vicarious NYC experience? You could buy a plane ticket, too.

thanks for your invite , noddy !
unfortunately mrs h is somewhat out of commission for the next few weeks : nasty hip problem and second cataract operation coming up - if it goes like the first one , it should be a breeze .

we drove to NYC in the seventies several times - about 8 hs of quite pleasant driving down the hudson valley .
flying from here via toronto would be VERY expensive - about the same as flying overseas and about as long !

so we probably dig up the photos we took and pretend we are there .
we also still have a stack of playbills of the various broadway shows we saw - hello dolly , plaza suite ... we certainly had great times in the BIG APPLE !
and will never forget jack dempsey's restaurant and fish market restaurant .

getting TWOFERS was a great way of getting tickets cheaply

I'm sorry to hear about Mrs. H's hip problems. Cataract surgery isn't the end of the world, but it isn't fun, either.

Perhaps next year....?

Hold your dominion.

dear everyone

Jane has just returned from Portland Oregon. The psychoanalytic community there has presented her with a not-to-be-refused offer. So it looks like we are moving there (keeping the jewelry business going online and via some shops). And we are going at the end of this month.

Which means we have just created a big problem for Walter who was going to stay with us. I am now trying to sort out some alternate accomodations for him while he's here. Anyone who might be able to help us get this sorted out, please drop me a pm.

Shocked

wow!

Congrats to Lola. Walter already knows the place I'll be at - and highly recommend - and that I think he may be entitled to a professional discount.

Yes, how wonderful for Lola!

Portland's a great city. I lived there for a couple of years way back when.
