It's not the Intrepid I'm interested in - it's the camera joint - B&H.

Hey I see there are 6 ft snow falls/drifts in upper-state New York.

How are our friends in NYC? What's it like there at the moment?

Well, I had to get up and to look out the window. No precipitation. It's nippy, though. We rarely get the weather from upstate. We usually get weather conditions from the west.

I've put in a plea to my NYC hostess for a bed in June when A2K will converge.

Thank you, that is most interesting.

Funnily enough, it is the seas which surround the British Isles which keeps our climate fairly mild- we are on the same latitude as Moscow, and Labrador, but we don't have hard winters.

we are on the NORTHERN(canadian) side of lake ontario and have had only about two feet snow in total - but it's been bitterly cold during the last three weeks - lows of MINUS 20 to 25 C overnight and we haven'd made it above freezing since mid-january - and another two weeks of the same being promised .

oswego and surounding communities - about 50 miles to the SOUTH across ontario - usually get hit much harder from so-called 'lake effect snow' .
when that snow comes blowing off lake ontario it often results in whiteouts . coming back from the south in early april we've run into whiteouts on interstate-81 . there's only one sensible thing to do - pull off - find a motel - stay the night .

when we look across lake ontario to the south we can often see the dark snow-clouds billowing up over there - while we have perfect sunshine !

At least, if you're a single passenger.

I bought a New Yorker magazine this month and there's lots of good jazz on.

That's nice. Cool

Picked up this info. Don't know how current it is. If it isn't current, assume that current prices are higher, not lower.

Carriage Ride Prices
Rides are approximately $34 for
a 20-minute ride and $75 for a
45-50 minute tour through
Central Park. Longer rides are negotiable. Prices may vary, so
be sure to ask prior to boarding
the carriage. Visit Central Park Carriages' web site for
up-to-date carriage prices
or call 212-736-0680.

I was thinking it'd be around $100 - $150 for once around the park. That's not bad for a mini-shared splurge. I'd rather do that than spend $150 - $250/per on a meal which was the food group's splurge in October.

E was also interested in the idea of a harbour cruise - I'm going to find out if Frank Apisa knows about any good sunset jazz cruises. She definitely wants to do some kind of special treat-ie thing.

Apparently, riding the Staten Island Ferry close to dawn isn't it Laughing

I took a cruise around Manhattan Island a number of years ago. Great stuff. Don't know about jazz cruises, though. Sorry.

Of course, one of the other attractions is Fine Roberta of the Upper East Side.

E's most curious to finally meet you (she was with me when I was searching for phone booths to call you on the trip before last), and BrendaLee thinks if E and I want to meet you, you must be a lotta fun.

We went to the Free Times Cafe last night for our plenary session. The Free Time Cafe is most famous for it's Bella Did You Eat! Sunday Brunch. It's kind of old-skooly Noo Yawk deli in some ways. Too much food, noise, interaction with serving staff ...

Sounds like my kinda place. Reminds me of a deli I used to go to in my youth in the Bronx. The waiter would sit down and try to coax me to finish my food. A Jewish mother who got a tip.

Beth, I vaguely remember taking a cruise with Dixlieland music. Many years ago. Had a great time exept that it was hot as hell.

I looked online for jazz cruises around Manhattan. I found one cruise line, but the cruises don't start until June 26. I'm sure there are others. You've got time.

And I'll ask around.
