This man knows from deli's.
Listen to the nice man.
Oy.
All these places are in a very good area for me to put into action my diabolical plan to make sure you never forget your trip to NYC...
<wringing hands, grinning devilishly>
liontamerX: are you joining us for the knosh??

ok - can I say that Katz's doesn't really seem like my kinda place - seems like it's for out-of-towners
I've seen it on the Food Network a few times, and it's always people who travelled from somewhere to see it. Do locals actually eat there on a lunch break?
Joe - track down Green Witch - she's in the city as well - she belongs with us as well!
Joe
Sadly I live in NC now and monetary and temporal complaints keep me from going anywhere.
Next time I will be back will probably be Oct.
But I can live vicariously through y'all, can't I ?
A different neighborhood - Diane and I met Semiotterly and Roberta at the Palace Deli on 57th Street. Now there was a menu... it reminded me slightly of Kanter's on Fairfax in LA, though the Palace was much tinier. How do you locals rate it?

of course they do.
i never went in there for lunch only because it was too far from my office, but often walked over for the proverbial hot tater knishe after work...
Katz's has never let a few movie folks spoil the food, it's been in a few shots but it's still the place to go. There are lot's of places that have been in movies in New York, like Harry's on the West Side, but except for a few pictures of Tom Hanks, it's just another place to eat on Amsterdam or Columbus. Harry's is a restaurant..
Oo. We should go to either Arnie's Deli (Broadway and eighty-something) or Ben's on 39th. The real thing and no tourists.
Look them up.
Joe(you can't order the pastrami and swiss because it's not kosher)Nation
This Ben's?
Ben's Delicatessan
can't find Arnie's anywhere (well, i can find Arnie's in Orange County, but not NY)
Hmmm, 667 italian restaurants...
Hard to know where to start, isn't it, ossoB?
Well, there was one that looked neat that I put on a thread sometime earlier this year. Back in a minute..
heck, I lost it between google and here. Name is I Trulli, at itrull.com - an ital restaurant and wine bar.. looks a bit fancy, but I think I need to go check it out when I am next in NYC.
edit to add -
I Trulli
I see the website doesn't list the address anywhere handy. Think it's in Gramercy Park area, on 27th.
Uh oh, did that kill the deli conversation?
Don't worry, ossoB. The deli conversation was a continuation of something from the breakfast thread. This thread comes and goes in fits and starts, as I (and all my great pals here <points at ossoB>) find Neww Yawwwwwk things of interest.
Ugh. I can't look at a menu. We had dinner (huge steaks) at Morton's tonight. Salads, shrimp and several glasses of good stuff.
Apple pie.
Joe(is the scampi stuffed or me)Nation
Morton's, gag. we had one of those in Beverly Hills a bit ago. Go elsewhere...
<not sans opinions osso>
edit to spell opinions correctly, sigh.
Well, I don't know what to say. It's a steakhouse. And this one was in a mall in Hackensack, NJ, not even the one in mid-town New York, but the staff was attentive, the food - and we are three people who share opinions on the food we are served- got good to high ratings- several omigods, for example.
Our waiter, though very new to his job, did his job and answered questions, changed ingredients (no avocado in the chopped salad) and did not disappear. My food was prepared well and the pace of the meal was appropriately relaxed.
Was it a great meal? Yes, for a steakhouse. You want a great meal go to Eleven Madison. There you float through the evening eating little bits and slices, sipping creamy morsels of ambrosiastic manna. hm hm hmmm.
