Hi bree,
I don't know the original source, but I got it from an article in The Nation, from the February 21,2005 edition, "Our Godless Constitution"
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml?i=20050221&s=allen
It looks like it's a quotation taken from one of Franklin's many biographers, Gordon Wood. If you find out, let me know. I'm curious too.
Francis.......did you give us a clue? Could you translate?
Corruptio optimi est pessima! - The best things, when corrupted, become the worst.
Quote from Silence Dogood, No. 9.
What are the dates for this shindig again? All I see in Beth's original post is "late April."
Andy,

Dunno yet, Bethie. It's a possibility. Have to see how my schedule pans out. I have to take some time off from the 9-to-5 to be in Washington, DC last week of March. April is still something of a mystery, all wrapped up snug and tight in an enigma.
An April enigma.
<nods sagely>
ehBeth, I suddenly remembered that I promised, over a week ago, to check out the Quality Inn on West 94th Street for you, so I went up there today to take a look at it. I only took a quick look around the lobby, but I was favorably impressed with the little bit I saw. I had thought I might ask to be shown an empty room, but the desk clerk was busy with several people who were all checking out at once, and I didn't see anyone else to ask.
The lobby was clean and appeared to be well maintained. Just to the left when you walk into the lobby, there's a small sitting area with a fireplace in which a fake fire was giving off a nice warm glow that felt good on a cold day like today (but which will hopefully be unnecessary in late April). In the sitting area, there was a signboard with handwritten notes giving directions to the closest subway and bus stops, and recommendations for neighborhood restaurants and shops. There was also a placard that said "Welcome Student Experience" (or some name like that), which suggests that the hotel may attract groups of high school or college students. However, it doesn't appear to be exclusively a student place, because I saw people of all ages in the lobby (including an elderly woman with a walker whom I would guess is a resident who held over when the building was converted from apartments to a hotel).
Apart from the one desk clerk and a very bored-looking woman who was sitting at a table with brochures about airport transportation, I didn't see any other hotel staff (like porters), so people were carrying their own luggage -- but I'm guessing you weren't expecting porter service, anyway.
Hope that helps.
Thanks, bree, that does help. The Quality scores decently in QuikBook and a couple of other sites you and Lola and hamburger and ... (?) recommended.
Since I usually travel fairly lightly when flying I wouldn't know what to do with a porter. Uhhh, here, carry the camera. A clean basic hotel, with a room where I might be able to put my feet on the floor is what I'm after - Quality does seem to have that - as well as what to my eye is a good location.
Thanks!
ms B
there will be racing @ Belmont , Aqueduct & Saratoga during your stay in nyc.
im positive belmont is accesible via public transit - im not certain as to whether the other two are ( one would think so but ive always driven when there )
admission is cheap and it's a day's fun.
Thanks, Wenchy!
I do enjoy an evening of fun out at Woodbine, definitely hoping to try something similar on the New York foray.
Why would you want to spend any time watching a bunch of horsesasses when you could be having dinner with the likes of Frank and Kicky and me. Or is that the same thing?

eh<knows there's no good response to that one>Beth smiles politely and keeps her back to the wall
Hexennacht.
<is Noddy planning pranks for NYC?>
Only to banish winter for another six months.
I suspect squeedleboink will have some music to help us with that effort.
So who the hell is coming with you on this trip, ehBeth? Have you talked littlek into it yet?
Me?
I'm not talkin' anybody into anything.
I'd be really happy if l'k was in New York while I'm there, but I'm not selling wampum to anyone.
