Hiding the Foundation (box spring) On My Bed

Reply Mon 10 Jan, 2005 01:32 pm
I wasn't sure where to put this so I plunked it here. As some of you may know, my husband and I have invested in a brand new pillow / memory foam top king size bed. Mr. Green

I've never actually furnished a bed. I've always had mismatched sheets and comforter. I have no idea what the names of all the fancy crap you can get for a bed are.....but I want them. Very Happy

The problem I need to solve is this: We have a full size mattress, not a low profile. The comforter will not cover both the mattress and the foundation so........what do I get to cover that? What is the technical term for it so when I go to buy it, I don't look like a complete loser. Any decorating tips appreciated. Very Happy

Hey, that's exciting Kristie!
Buying Bed linens is my passion. However, I mostly buy
the european duvet covers & pillows, as I have a european bed as well.

For a boxspring, what you need is a bedskirt, that usually has the same pattern as your comforter and other linens - or if you
want to change patterns more often, than you could choose
a uni-colored bedskirt.

If you go to a linen store, they sell the whole package deal
or look here for ideas http://ww1.potterybarn.com/cat/index.cfm?cid=bab&cmtype=nav

It's called a bed skirt.

FYI: I made my own, much cheaper and you get just what you want. You don't even have to sew!

All I did was measure around the three sides of the bed that you can see. Measure from the floor to the top of the box springs. Go to the fabric store.

Make sure you pick fabric that is at least 2x as wide as your floor to top of springs height. (Most upholstry fabric is 56").

Buy half as many yards as you measured around your bed (For example - if it is 18' divide by 2 = 9' = 3 yards of fabric needed.

Fold the fabric in half lenghtwise and split so you end up with two really long pieces.

Use that new-sew hem tape to put a hem it in.

Tuck it up under the bed or use velcro with sticky backs.

Done!

I bought really cool, kind of expensive fabric (about $30 per yard) and ended up with a great bed skirt for less than $100.

Thanks everyone! I knew they were called something but I couldn't remember what!!

The other thing is....our new bed has the wooden side panels that I don't want to hide. So I don't want something to go to the floor. I suppose if I make it, that would be the easiest and best solution. My new bed is one of those really high ones....I have to practically get a running start to leap up! I love it.!

I will NEVER buy anything less than 200 ct again. I made the mistake of buying 180 ct percal sheets.....it was like sleeping on sandpaper. I don't know how people do it. I personally like 250 or higher. Sateen is fabulous but expensive. And 400 ct is like budda.....

And the sheets should be 100 % Cotton (at least for me)
that feels just better on the skin. And cotton get's softer
with each wash.

Dust Ruffle/bed skirt

Bed bath and beyond, linens and things, department stores should have them.

The nice thing is, they have nice smooth box-cut ones now so that you don't have to have that girly ruffle. Mine is pleated and made out of courdoroy.

Or you could just get bedframe that hides the box spring.

From the looks of that Pottery Barn photo, maybe you could just put another fitted sheet over the box springs.

As Slappy is our resident 'metrosexual' I am awaiting his input with baited breath.

BTW Kristie, is there a technical name for the pile of lolly (bon-bon) wrappers and chocolate bar wrappers that accumulates just below the woman's side of the bed?
