I don't know a darn thing about the Canadian military, but I think that the folks on this site do:

good time to risk your life for nothing....of course Canada may be different...you may actually stick to having a military that is merely for defending your homeland and not invading the homeland of others for profit ......

well I certianly wouldnt consider joining the army if that meant the assurance of being shipped off to war. and Im not too concerned about Canada getting invaded either its more for the training they offer, and the expierence

Really? Canada has enormous oil and gas reserves, especially around Edmonton. Ask Ceili.

It's your call dan_E. As I mentioned to Craven when he was having similar thoughts, people enlist for any number of reasons; yours are as good as any. The trade off is that Canada gets a relatively inexpensive defensive and deterrent force. How inexpensive is something you discover when you receive your first pay packet.

Take on all the training, experience, and responsibility you can get. It is a certainty you won't be doing it for either money or gratitude.

danE - before you do anything, read General Romeo Dallaire's book, Shake Hands with the Devil . link Mostly about his time in Rwanda.

I grew up in a military town - army base as well as RMC, and Fort Frontenac (the international military college). There can definitely be some upsides, but enlisting is not something to take lightly, even in Canada.

thanx ehBeth I will, just as soon as I can get ahold of it, but something tells me that it shows more the negative side than not.

hmmmm, I think General Dallaire has always been proud to be part of the Canadian military - believes good things can be done - but the frustrations of bureaucracy can certainly have more effect on people's lives

I wouldn't tell someone not to enlist - but I'd say it's best to enlist with your eyes as open as possible.

and maple syrup and pancakes - and no military talk - when you come back to Canada.
