i made it to regionals and i go to arlington heights(that's in fort worth, conterary to what the name might imply). i got first at district, but to be fair some of my competition didn't know what a criterion is. so i'm not sure how i'm going to do. i have regionals saturday so whoever is in the dallas region, this is your competition(not much).

hmm...
well-regionals is saturday-whos not ready? its me! j/k i don't care its my first year so i'm happy to have made it this far. i will be anything but disapointed. if i don't go to state i won't miss my college exam and cause a lot of problems and interfere with my stanford interview so- it'd save me a lot of trouble... good luck everybody!

Congratulations all around, debaters. And for those of you who are graduating and moving on to college, we'd like to hear from you as you take up new topics in the fall. Likewise for those of you who aren't graduating.

Don't be strangers around here.

Report: Only rich Texans would see tax cuts
Associated Press

AUSTIN ?- Only those Texans who make more than $140,000 a year would see a net tax cut under a school funding plan the Senate is considering, according to a new legislative study.

Everyone else would see a net increase in taxes if the Legislature approves a plan designed to offset school property taxes with a bevy of new taxes on shoppers, smokers, drinkers and businesses.

Meanwhile, the first part of the package to revamp public school funding seemed stalled in the Senate, where it had been expected to get a vote today.

"The whole debate is about tax cuts to the wealthy. That's not good public policy," said Sen. Eliot Shapleigh, D-El Paso.

Senate leaders appeared to be having trouble wrangling the required two-thirds of the 31-member body to agree to bring the bill up for debate. Senators were concerned about another analysis released earlier in the day by the comptroller's office showing how much money schools would get in each lawmaker's district.

The plan would add $2.9 billion in additional money to the state's $30 billion public school system. It would give business and residential property owners a 27 percent tax cut, starting this year and phased in next year. The full cut would be contingent on passage and voter approval of a statewide property tax.

The second part of the package, which had been expected to be considered by the chamber Tuesday, raises additional money by increasing the sales tax, cigarette tax, alcohol tax and restructuring the state's business tax.

Middle-class Texans ?- those who make between $40,000 and $52,000 ?- would see the highest increase in taxes, paying a $151 million increase, or 3.7 percent more, according to the report released Sunday by the Legislative Budget Board.

Families with incomes under $13,400 would see a slightly smaller net increase in taxes due to rebates made through the Lone Star Card used by low-income Texans to buy groceries.

"The problem with this bill is it raises some taxes to cut others," said Dick Lavine, a policy analyst for the Center for Public Policy Priorities. But, he said, it doesn't raise significant new money for public schools.

I saw that, and I think that it is crap. But, if you think about it, alot of times it is the middle class, not the upper class, who spend such a large part of their income on cigarets and alcohol. Maybe, with the rising gas prices, some habits would be kicked, but I am pretty sure that the only outcome would be more children being raised in poverty, ultimately backfiring on this committee that strives to improve education.

By the way, i got third in state in my division (AA) Those Blanco kids are GOOOOODDDDDD!!!!!!!
