Hmm Eric Hofer, the longshoreman/sociologist.
My undergraduate sociology prof. was enamoured of EH and especially his book, 'The True Believer'.

Here's a little description of Hoffer and 'The True Believer' .
Actually it's from the back cover of the book's latest edition. (it was originally published 50+ years ago but is still surprisingly relevant)
