The US Supreme Court, as they should, declined to hear the case regarding the Massachusettes Law granting homosexuals the right to marry.

IMO, The USSC is correct not to interfere in a State issue, regardless of the opinions of many that the State Supreme Court is legislating from the bench.

Yet, I would expect the State to be able to obtain enough votes to amend the State Constitution prohibiting marriage, yet oferring civil union rights. I am not sure at the Federal Level if an amendment will have the votes to pass.

From an msnbc article on the same:

Quote:
Merita Hopkins, a city attorney in Boston, had told justices in court papers that the people who filed the suit have not shown they suffered an injury and could not bring a challenge to the Supreme Court. "Deeply felt interest in the outcome of a case does not constitute an actual injury," she said.

Massachusetts Attorney General Tom Reilly told justices that voters can overrule the Supreme Court by adopting a constitutional amendment if they so wish.

I like that line: Deeply felt interest in the outcome of a case does not constitute an actual injury.

Yay for state's rights!
