Well, he definitely seems to like it in there.

If you want to satisfy him though, I think an explanation of the proper usage of semi-colons would do the trick; that is the one thing he has never been able to understand!

It's correct to use them when you could use a full stop (period, sorry) but the two parts of the sentence are so connected that it seems too large a break.

The colon is more tricky; theoretically it should be used when the two parts of the sentence mean the same or have the same grammatical form. For example: here is the example.
He should be here now: this is his usual arrival time.
