Does Gmail allow e-mails in one's inbox to accumulate indefinitely or are they automatically deleted at some point?

They stay until you delete them or move them to another folder. Gmail does not delete any messages from your account (other than Trash and Spam after about 30 days).

If emails have vanished from your inbox it would be because you have deleted, moved, or archived them, possibly without realizing.
