Can old e-mails from the inbox and sent box of my Gmail account be retrieved?

When I do searches, the e-mails from many years ago do not come up.

I think there's a time limit on Google for emails - you can specify how long they can be saved, up to a point. If you create a folder, however, and move them there, they will always be there.

That is my understanding of it, anyway.
