Anti-Muslim Dutch politicians in hiding after death threats

This year... next year... in 25-years time... in 75-years time... a leader will arise in British politics who will sort out the chaff from the wheat... Dutch Airport Fire Kills 11 Immigrants

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - A fire roared through a prison complex at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Thursday, killing 11 illegal immigrants awaiting deportation and injuring 15 other people.

The nationalities of the dead were not immediately known.

"They were illegal aliens waiting to be extradited to their countries of origin," said Immigration Service spokesman Martin Bruinsma. "We are still busy trying to confirm their identities."

The cause of the fire was being investigated, said border police spokesman Rob Stenakker. Officials declined to comment on reports that one of the prisoners may have set the fire and that the cells were unsafe.

Several members of the Dutch parliament called for an independent investigation into whether the prison complex complied with safety standards.

The prison block on the east side of Europe's fourth-largest airport is surrounded by a 10-foot fence and barbed wire. Set up in 2002, it is used to detain people who arrive by plane and have been refused entry to the Netherlands, including drug smugglers and failed asylum seekers.

An unknown number of detainees escaped during the blaze, but three were captured.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight and raged until 3 a.m. Firefighters and airport police were among the injured, according to news reports. Four people were hospitalized. [..]

A prisoner told the Dutch television station NOS that guards initially did not take prisoners' warnings of a fire seriously and told them nothing was wrong.

"They didn't open the door. They kept us locked up. Our throats started hurting. We were kicking and screaming," said the detainee, who was not identified. [..]

The Netherlands, which has adopted one of the toughest immigration policies in Europe, is in the process of deporting some 26,000 asylum seekers who have been denied Dutch residency. Rights groups have criticized the policy, saying people have been deported to countries where they could face persecution or abuse.

Hundreds of cocaine smugglers, mostly from the Caribbean and Curacao, are detained at the airport every year, as are immigrants caught trying to enter the country illegally. Prison cell capacity was greatly expanded in 2002.

As to be expected, the papers open with horrific news and photos covering the fatal fire at a detention centre for illegal aliens at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. De Telegraaf devotes its entire front-page to the story and gives us the key details at a glance in its opening headlines: "Burning cell stayed shut. Eleven dead at Schiphol. Fatal hesitation. Guards only briefly trained."

De Telegraaf calls the deaths "a great tragedy" and appeals for several thorough independent investigations into how the fire got started, why it spread so quickly, and whether safety regulations had been observed.

De Telegraaf predicts that the work of identifying the victims will be a very complex task, given that many illegal aliens travel with false papers, and "the eleven foreigners were burned alive in their cells."

In a truly cynical swipe at the government's strict policy of expelling illegal aliens, the Algemeen Dagblad prints a cartoon showing the Minister of Immigration and Integration Rita Verdonk asking an adviser, "Now, are their bodily remains required to leave the country, or not?"

FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG

De Volkskrant relates the story of 18-year-old Oleg Mateus from Russia, who was locked up with his father in the fatal Block K of the Schiphol detention centre in October. They were released after a week when it was discovered the authorities had detained them by mistake.

The Protestant daily Trouw writes in a commentary, "The Dutch authorities have a special responsibility towards the people who lost their lives in yesterday's fire... They were illegal aliens, not convicts. You could also say they were refugees... Something went fundamentally wrong."

Trouw is also disappointed that parliament spent the day prematurely debating the fire. "It would have been better if parliament had used that time to reflect once more on the shamefully ramshackle housing we expect these people to live in."

Trouw quotes one Iranian detainee, a trained journalist who speaks fluent Dutch, who said the ten minutes between his realising there was a fire and the guards' opening of his cell were "longer than my whole life".

And what about the Welsh, the Scottish, Northern-Irish parts in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

Well I'm not denying there are problems. And I support moves to encourage a sense of Britishness amongst immigrants.......no please dont faint......but sending them "back" is simply unworkable, immoral and counter productive.

Identify yourself Steve! 'Out' yourself. What particular brand of alien immigrant ethnicity are you wanting to defend here... ? Don't hide in the shadows where the rats like to play. You're a Muslim? A black? A homosexual? A South East Asian? A UK politician? An al-Qaeda mole... ?
