Why are the non-americans so different about the vote?

Yeah, I think that the impression one gets while travelling may not be a true impression as the people you interact with are in professions where there is an expected level of rudeness. Like flight attendants. Most people don't get time to mingle much while travelling.

Sure. Now I only spent a weekend in Paris, but I spent a lot of that time walking around various places. Getting a cab was too much of an adventure, as was the subway. I honestly can say the only people that were not rude were the folks that ran the Greek restaurant I frequented. That's right ... they weren't French.

I'm impressed. 48 hours in one European city most certainly gives you an excellent impression of a complete country, it's inhabitants etc - surely more than those get, who visit all of Europe by bus within 4 days.

Btw: how did you manage that

What would have been more impressive is if I had met just one person during my visit to that city that was not rude to me, aside from the folks at the restaurant who were busy smashing the plates on the floor, singing Greek songs, and drinking ouzo.

If you've paid attention to what I said above, you understand that I acknowledge the fact that there are people in France that aren't rude, but based on my brief visit, the caracature of the rude French is well-deserved.

Noone was rude to me in France.

I've found that people often see what they want to see, Tico.

Might depend on who you are an when you went. For instance, many french can be quite racist agains north Africans, and many also do not like Americans. If you happened to go after we started eating freedom fries, for instance...

If you want to see a truly fascinating reaction, watch a Quebecois - who thinks Setanta is a big loud Anglo - when he starts speaking French with an African accent. They really don't know what to make of him. Laughing

I went to Paris during the summer of 1991. Before I arrived I had vaguely heard that the French were rude, but had not formed any preconceived notions of how I might be treated. I quickly gathered that the Parisians that I interacted with did not like Americans (at least me) coming to their city. Based on the fact that I clearly spoke "American," and I'm sure I dressed the part, there was no doubt regarding the country of my origin.

Before this turns into a discussion about who's nice with American tourists in Budweiser shorts and who isn't, lemme say Ticomaya is right.

They chose between pretending to be a "kinder, gentler" empire and being openly the Empire we outsiders don't have to like, but to see from below.
They chose being the open Empire, will gloat about it and it's their right. Their choice was also not to care about our opinion.

We'd never choose Bush. So what. It's their election.
We chose not to like the results, but that's all we can do.

Maybe we should stop referring to the pResidency as the leader of the free world, as we continue to lose our freedoms everyday...

Freedoms like the right to have your vote counted without being harrassed.

Amazing that half of THIS country agrees with the rest of the world.

Which makes the neoconservative movement here a stunning minority globally.

Isolationism and global domination, here we come!!!

I'm sorry to admit that I had a terrible experience in France in 1969. Granted, the Viet Nam war was raging...but the French were so haughty and rude. And they heaped abuse on me for the debacle in Nam. I tried to explain to them that they had begun the war but to no avail.
I know I should get the chip off my shoulder but it is difficult to do.

I understand your point, but I disagree. I like most tourists, and I'm not annoyed by them. Hell, I'm amazed when any make it to Kansas. What, are they here to see the wheatfields, or the largest ball of twine in the world? Okay, so maybe the novelty hasn't worn off with me yet. Laughing

But if I run into any that have trouble speaking English, I don't go out of my way to make them feel stupid, or feel that they shouldn't have come to the US because they don't speak English. I go out of my way to help them.
