Does Democrat = Socialist?

Reply Tue 2 Nov, 2004 04:09 pm
For all you people (all three of you) who haven't heard my views on politics, here is why I hate the idea of socialism for the United states:

Socialism:  the government stealing from people with more money and giving it to people with less.  Why attempt to work hard and be successful when it will end up costing you?
[Ex: higher tax percentages demanded of higher income brackets]

Socialism: The government doing its typical cruddy beaurocratic job (with your money) at something that a business could do much better.
[Ex. the idea of national health care in the U.S.]

Socialism:  With no incentive for new technology, business becomes stagnant.  With low profit or no profit rewards, why try something risky and innovative?
[Ex: Dems. want technology laws demanding that any business that puts up new cables share those cables with everyone else.  Hence, no one will put up new cables or innovative technology which they will be forced to share with competitors.]

Socialism: Larger beaurocratic government automatically equals a more authoritarian society with less civil liberty.
A larger government also results in more politicians with more influence, and henceforth more corruption.
A larger government automatically equals more big businesses and monopolies, because it is often preferential government legislation and skewed politics that keeps businesses which would otherwise fall in a free market system on top.

So, while sounding like it would liberate the masses, socialism in a large country is governmental theft, overgrowth, and stagnation.

Are the democrats becoming synonymous with socialists?  And should Kerry be elected, what does this mean for our country?

It seems kind of depressing, the choice between a daddy's boy who can't form a coherent sentance and a liberty-squishing socialist who won't state his opinions about anything.

If Kerry is elected the biggest disenfranchisment will be among the greatest generation. I really wish the Dems could have put up a better candidate. This guy will say anything to get elected. You have to look at his voting record, and I doubt most people who will vote for him have.

He's a socialist gun grabbing ultra liberal Franco-sympathizer with a U.N agenda.

Man, I wish the average American had just a modicum of understanding of what socialism constitutes.

It's more than a knee-jerk epithet you know.

Good thing I'm not an Average American.

You don't see nationalized health care, extreme regulation of business, and a heavy, hierarchical redistributive tax system as socialist policies?

I am a socialist and Portal Star has it wrong. Socialism has nothing to do with wanting the "government to steal from you".

But the Democrats are not socialists, which is why I am not a Democrat.

You may not be an average American, but you have little understanding of socialism.

Craven, having no first hand experience living in a socialist state, perhaps some of us don't have the depth of understanding that you claim to own. That doesn't prevent me from seeing Kerry's platform and voting record appear as a socialist agenda.

Are we so blinded by partisan rage that every other thread (not just on this forum, but all political forums) is about one of the parties' "agenda." Yes, there are socialists in America... they belong to the SOCIALIST party (surprising, eh?).

If you don't agree with certain policies, you should argue against those specific policies. Naked name calling only retards political discourse in this country.

I do believe the neocons are lashing out. I guess a Kerry win doesn't sit well in their intellectually vacuous world.

This is why Americans don't understand Canada. We are a social democracy. I think that confuses you people. Wink

I'm guessing you're referring to my post. This is what I posted:

"He's a socialist gun grabbing ultra liberal Franco-sympathizer with a U.N agenda."

I see a bunch of appropriately descriptive adjectives, not name calling.
