In my humble opinion Labor's chances at the next election depend on the same thing as before: Good policies. Good, strong policies that are a genuine alternative to the dismal stuff we're living through right now. I think Latham tried to do that (in far too short a time with insufficient consultation & support) & his message failed to register with the Australian public. .... who were more concerned about the level of debt they had gotten themselves into to respond to anything resembling principled choices, anyway. <sigh>
Mark Latham is gone from Labor. All voters know that now, say nothing of in two years time. It is now up to Labor to address significant problems with strong policies that are different to the Libs & ring true with the electorate. No easy thing!

elsewhere people were talking (well actually Thomas from Germany) about correct use of English

Notice you say Labor = American English.

yet I'm sure someone else may have been rabbit

commented that Australian Spelling = English spelling

When the Australian Labor Party was formed in the 1890s they actually consciously used the American spelling - "Labor".

It's quite true that Australian spelling is the same as English and Canadian spelling. Ordinarily we say "labour" and "colour" and so on (some media outlets insist on using the American spelling, I have no idea why).

Hmmm, not so early.

Listening to Lateline, and the attack has begun.

The line is "evil Labor don't love America and electing them would jeopardise the alliance"

Dishing the dirt, and the dirt is, "a reasonably high percentage of Labor people do not believe America would honour the alliance if Australia were attacked."

That's DIRT?

Chris Pyne leading the attack.

Actually, I think the post-Latham stuff is running out of wind in the media. Before too long it'll be yesterday's story. I think this is just the likes of Pyne trying to squeeze as much mileage out of it as they can. Excellent diversion from IR "reform" & the Telstra sale ... both of which will be back to haunt the Libs before too long. And the US Alliance? I still feel the same as before. I don't believe that having our own positions on particular matters (eg Iraq, or the FTA) necessarily make us "anti-American"/anti-Alliance. If only Labor could develop a policy separate to the Libs!

msolga wrote:
..... And I heard Vaile (sp?) yesterday carry on about Labor's need to clarify it's position on the US Alliance, post Latham. Would it be such a dreadful thing for ANY party to say that we have our OWN interests, which at times might be totally at odds with the current US government? It disgust me to hear the likes of Howard & Vaile talk as if they have done the right thing by the ordinary people of this country. They haven't. They've abandoned them. At least Latham CARED, flawed as he was. They don't.

God I love Bob Brown (and I'm not religious or gay)

I'm so glad this one hasn't been swept away yet - it stinks. However, there's no way there is going to be a senate inquiry now that the bad guys control the senate.....

Charges should be laid over Parkin leak, Brown says

Greens Senator Bob Brown is calling for police to charge those he says were responsible for leaking intelligence information about US peace activist Scott Parkin to a national newspaper.

Mr Parkin denied being a threat to national security and rejected suggestions that he had promoted violent protest methods during his time in Australia.

Senator Brown says he was refused details about Mr Parkin's arrest before the activist was deported as a threat to national security.

Senator Brown says allegations that Mr Parkin planned to throw marbles under police horses later emerged in a newspaper.

"The leaking of the information to the Australian newspaper is illegal," he said.

"It requires police action and charges to be laid."

Senator Brown is demanding to know why he was denied a briefing on the reasons for Mr Parkin's arrest and says the Government should be made accountable.

"I'll be moving in the Senate, when we return in a week's time, for an inquiry into how the Government and ASIO got it so wrong with Scott Parkin, who was under false allegations, gossip from somewhere, arrested and deported from this country on charges that are simply untrue," he said.

Senator Brown says Mr Parkin should be compensated, his visa returned, and the Prime Minister should apologise for what Senator Brown says was a grave miscarriage of justice.

The Greens leader is also writing to the inspector-general of Intelligence and Security.

"I want to know why I wasn't briefed on it when I asked," he said.

"It's patently obvious now because I'd have analysed this and without going into details put a very different, come to a very different [conclusion] to the Labor leaders who failed in their duty to analyse the information they were getting and make an independent judgement on it."

Yes, I rather fancy BB myself, hinge! And he's right (as always!) on this one, too.

An end in sight?:

Australia won't confirm partial Iraq withdrawal

September 24, 2005/SMH

THE Federal Government has distanced itself from reports it has told Japan it will withdraw Australian troops protecting Japanese military engineers in southern Iraq by May next year.

Japan's Kyodo news agency today reported Japanese government sources had said Australia and Britain had informed them they planned to pull out of the southern Iraqi city of Samawah, where Japanese forces are involved in humanitarian and reconstruction work, by May.

It said Tokyo would look at pulling out its troops in line with the Australian and British moves.

Australia has not given a definite timetable for withdrawal, however when the Government deployed 450 troops to the region earlier this year to protect Japanese personnel it said the initial deployment would be for 12 months.

Defence Minister Robert Hill is currently overseas and his spokesman could not confirm the Japanese report.

However, he said a withdrawal in May next year was in line with the Government's commitment.

More Aussie troops likely for Afghanistan
September 25, 2005 - 8:17PM/SMH

Defence Minister Robert Hill has discussed with the newly-elected Afghani government sending a further 200 Australian troops to Afghanistan.

Australia will decide later this year whether to send a provincial reconstruction team (PRT) of up to 200 personnel to help rebuild roads, power networks, hospitals and schools destroyed by years of war... <cont>

Nope. MORE troops for Afghanistan. Yep, the article suggested we would be pulling out at around the same time at the Brits.
