Pressure on Libs to pay $5m ad bill
By Phillip Hudson
Political Correspondent, Canberra
August 28, 2005/Sunday AGE

LABOR is demanding that the Liberal Party, not the taxpayer, pay a $5 million bill for advertisements promoting the Federal Government's industrial relations changes if the High Court rules the money was spent without proper authorisation by Parliament.

The court will tomorrow consider whether the taxpayer-funded ads are illegal, after a challenge by ACTU secretary Greg Combet and shadow attorney-general Nicola Roxon.

Although legislation for the planned workplace overhaul is yet to be presented to Parliament, the Government recently launched radio and newspaper ads to counter television commercials paid for by the ACTU that warn workers' rights will be eroded. The Government insists it has authority to spend the money.

Ms Roxon told The Sunday Age that if the Government loses the case, the Liberal Party should pay for the ads. "If the court agrees with us that the Government didn't have proper parliamentary approval for this expenditure, then the Liberal Party should reimburse the taxpayer immediately," she said. .....<cont>

Coonan may ease media ownership rules

The federal Communications Minister, Helen Coonan, says the Government is considering allowing one company to own a newspaper, radio station and a television network in the same market.

Under the current arrangements, a single company can only own two of the three forms of media in a single market.

Senator Coonan has told the National Press Club that subject to a number of licensing conditions and limits on audience reach, she is looking at ways to allow different media systems to merge.... <cont>

Yes, it was! Shocked But I hardly think "the media" was to blame for the pickle he found himself in.

Yes! Shocked again!
But don't you think Bronwyn should seriously consider wearing one to hide THAT hair-do? It's a shocker!

Every time I hear Bronwyn I think "is she still there??" And of course she is. I then remember the push to get Bronwyn as PM. If the Libs are this bad with JH what would they have been with Bronwyn?

Interesting reading about & listening to the recriminations about the media's part in John Brogden's downfall, then suicide attempt. Now it seems that the religious Right of his own party (NSW Liberal) fed the incriminating evidence to the press. How's that for ruthless determination?
But, in my humble opinion, the media's handling of Brogden pales into insignificance when compared to the long, drawn-out roasting that Mark Latham received at the hands of the press. Now THAT was ruthless! And god knows how it impacted on his health & his life. Did anyone care about that? And, given what we now know about Brogden's internal (NSW Right) enemies (who now control the NSW party leadership), it makes me wonder about who was behind the "get Latham" push. It was quite a campaign, that one! Shocked

Once again Glen Milne is the conduit. I am being measured here when I suggest that Milne and Howard are far too close. If Heffernan is Howard's Parliamentary attack dog then surely Milne is Howard's media attack dog.

As for Costello. Kym nailed him. He doesn't have the bottle. Turnbull will, as the cartoon indicates, rip right past him. It's as if Cassius were standing at the edge of the forum, biting his nails, shifting from sandalled foot to sandalled foot muttering "dareI? dare I?". Turnbull might be the smooth silvertail but he will push past Cassius, I mean, Costello, and get the first good one into Howard's back, then stamp on the carcass and claim the job.

But just think. We might get a republic at last Very Happy

I'm tempted to say one without a monarch Very Happy But that's me being silly.
I want to vote for the president. There, I know that goes against the experts but they can take a running jump.

We all know who the "experts" are, so who cares what they say, right? Rolling Eyes

Another cheerifying thought: If Turnbull becomes the next Lib leader he might conduct the party exactly like he conducted the Republican campaign! I DO hope he succeeds! Laughing

As much as I wouldn't vote Lib I think if Turnbull was PM msolga we might see a break with the stale old political paradigms in Australia - and I do include Kym and the ALP in that condemnation. They're so damn timid.
