To be fair, the Immigration Department still has Ruddock stamped all over it. He set the tone, performed the initial foul deeds (at the time wearing is Amnesty Badge! Rolling Eyes), then was rewarded by being moved onto more "respectable" responsibilities. I understood at the time she took over that Vanstone's brief (she being considered a Lib wet) was to put a more humane & respectable face on things, soften & deflect some to the criticism that the government had been receiving here & abroad . But, of course, it is very hard to change an entrenched culture & that was what she has been up against. For all I know she may have softened the approach of DIMA, but the outrageous legacy has lived on. Just say Vanstone has tried her best to improve the government's approach toward asylum seekers, she has still had to do it within the context of the Howard government's "tough" stance. A bit of a juggling act, I'd imagine. I reckon she might now think that she was sold a pup by Howard & Ruddock! Perhaps she might have been more effective had there been more Petro Georgios & Judy Moylans pushing for a fair deal for asylum seekers, but they were just a small, very brave (reckless even?) minority with a conscience within the Liberal government. Everyone else just shut up, toed the line & "followed orders".

You may well be right there, hinge. I am certainly not a "fan" of Vanstone, Howard, Downer, Ruddock & the rest. You know that. I want a very different vision & approach to governing this country.

But I was discussing this particular issue within the context of degrees of decency & accountability within the Liberal government. They have been appalling, on just about every front that matters. Their day of reckoning is not all that far off. We are always a few steps behind the US & the UK in these things. This disgraceful phase of government will be (finally!) addressed by voters, before too long, I'd say.

She's most likely doing what her leader requires.

Depressing on so many levels.

By the way, Pauline Hanson has announced her intention to run in the next Federal election - something about making sure black south africans don't have aids...

Help me bejeebus.

Yes, isn't it?

Something strange happens to folk when they win parliamentary seats. (Bye bye, integrity!)

I mean, look at Malcolm, post-politics. Is he a changed man, or what? Possibly, just possibly, under that grim PM exterior, an idealist lingered! What an idea!Idea Surprised

So possibly, just possibly, Amanda could be half-decent, despite the political/media personae?

Now there's a thought! Idea

Memo #1: Never become a politician if you want to retain some semblence of self-respect.

Memo #2: Never join a political party if you care about retaining your independence of thought! (I'm starting to sound like Mark L here! Laughing But then, I had a quiet regard for his political beliefs & his sheer nerve (minus the violent bits, of course! )

Pauline considering reentering politics?: She'll be right at home in 2007! She might even be considered rather conservative by some Liberals!

Listening to a writer who's writing the biography of Kim Beazely. He said that he just couldn't find anyone who had anything bad to say about the man on a personal level. And he was of the opinion that he simply lacked the viciousness required to be the main protagonist as an opposition leader is supposed to be. What a disgusting comment on society. We going to lose a very decent man from politics, while John Howard, who is a morally bankrupt and reprehensible human being, has acheived the greatest heights politics can offer in this country.

Politically, that may be so. But on a personal level, he's a very decent man. Howard is no such thing.
