The transmediale - international media art festival Berlin - will, in February 2003, be presenting outstanding works of media art for the 16th time.

This year's festival at the House of World Cultures in Berlin, which runs from February 1st - 5th under the motto: "play global!", deals with the artistic and cultural responses to globalisation.

TRANDMEDIALE

"Play Global!

Globalisation appears today as an unavoidable fact. Economics, politics, society and culture take place within a global network. However, the playground for participants in the global game varies considerably.

transmediale.03's central conference "Play Global!" will present artistic projects and ideas in which the utopias and dystopias of a global culture are played out. In conjunction with the discussion about cultural strategies for the global game, artists like Heidrun Holzfeind (at) or Coco Fusco (us/mx) present their works about Romanian immigrants in Austria and illegal Mexican workers in the US.

The festival's keynote, „Art Acts Global", will be held by art historian and curator Sarat Maharaj (gb/za), one of the most outstanding and knowledgeable art critics in the age of globalisation. "Cross-Border Cultures" "

Walter, thanks for posting the link and information. As an art student in college, I was astonished to find that there were far-advanced art concepts presented in the European arenas of art forums: far far more exciting than in available in the USA. In fact, to this day, American artists are often first recognized in Europe before their homeland. I swear that this adage really holds true for artists: if you are from far away, you are an expert. If you are local, you are 'small potatoes'.

Globalization also works for the arts such as music. To succeed as a blues musician in the US, it helps greatly to have a tour in Europe, where blues is financially-supported far better than in the US. So, does this
mean that globalization is required now in some arts? Perhaps!
